Distinguished Conservation Service Award
The Distinguished Conservation Service Award (DCSA), formerly the William T. Hornaday Award, is an awards program operated by Scouting America, designed to recognize outstanding environmental stewardship and service to conservation. Three separate awards, each with different requirements, are issued to youth, adults, and organizations. The award was created by William Temple Hornaday as the Permanent Wild Life Protection Fund Medal in 1915. After his death, the program was renamed in Hornaday’s honor in 1938 and became an official Scouting America award program. In 2020, Scouting America renamed and significantly modified the program, stating that some of Hornaday's beliefs went against the organization’s values. The DCSA is considered to be the one of the rarest awards issued by Scouting America, with just 1,200 youth medals awarded in over 100 years. William Temple Hornaday
William Temple Hornaday, Sc.D. (December 1, 1854 – March 6, 1937) was an American zoologist, conservationist, taxidermist, and author. He served as the first director of the New York Zoological Park, known today as the Bronx Zoo, and he was a pioneer in the early wildlife conservation movement in the United States. Biography Hornaday was born in Avon, Indiana, and educated at Oskaloosa College, the Iowa State Agricultural College (now Iowa State University) and in Europe. After serving as a taxidermist at Henry Augustus Ward's Natural Science Establishment in Rochester, New York, he spent 1.5 years, 1877–1878 in India and Ceylon collecting specimens. In May 1878 he reached southeast Asia and traveled in Malaya and Sarawak in Borneo. His travels inspired his first publication, ''Two Years in the Jungle'' (1885). Scouting America
Scouting America is the largest scouting organization and one of the largest List of youth organizations, youth organizations in the United States, with over 1 million youth, including 176,000 female participants. Founded as the Boy Scouts of America in 1910, about 130 million Americans have participated in its programs, which are served by 477,000 adult volunteers. Scouts BSA (previously known as Boy Scouts, the official name until 2019) is the flagship membership level of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) for boys and girls between the ages of typically 11 and 17. Scouts are expected to develop personal religious values, learn the principles of American heritage and government, and acquire skills to become successful adults. Eagle Scout
Eagle Scout is the highest achievement or rank attainable in the Scouts BSA program of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA). Since its inception in 1911, only four percent of Scouts have earned this rank after a lengthy review process. The Eagle Scout rank has been earned by over 2.5 million youth. Requirements include earning at least 21 merit badges. The Eagle Scout must demonstrate Scout Spirit, an ideal attitude based upon the Scout Oath and Law, service, and leadership. This includes an extensive service project that the Scout plans, organizes, leads, and manages. A Scout leader or Scouter generally refers to the trained adult leader of a Scout unit. The terms used vary from country to country, over time, and with the type of unit. Roles There are many different roles a leader can fulfill depending on the type of unit. Positions are usually voluntary and are often divided between 'uniform' and 'lay' roles. For many, this volunteerism is an avocation. Uniformed Scout Leaders are primarily responsible for organizing the activities of the group, and training the youth members through the Scout program. Eagle Scout Service Project
The Eagle Scout Service Project, or simply Eagle Project, is the opportunity for a Scout (Scouts, B.S.A.), or qualified Venturer or Sea Scout in the Boy Scouts of America (B.S.A.) to demonstrate leadership of others while performing a project for the benefit of their community. This is the culmination of the Scout's leadership training, and it requires a significant effort on his or her part. The project must benefit an organization other than the B.S.A., and it cannot be performed for an individual or a business or be commercial in nature.
