Disston House
The Disston Mansion is an American house that is located in North Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. History and architectural features Disston Mansion was designed by architect Edwin Forrest Durang, who was best known for his architectural designs of church buildings. It was the residence of Albert H. Disston, who died on October 21, 1883, at the age of 34. Disston was the son of Henry Disston Henry Disston (May 24, 1819 – March 16, 1878) was an England, English United States, American industrialist who founded the Disston Saw Works, Keystone Saw Works in 1840 and developed the surrounding Tacony, Philadelphia, Tacony neighborhood of ..., the founder of the Disston saw company, for which the younger Disston worked. In its notice of Disston's death, the ''Pittsburgh Commercial Gazette'' called the house "palatial" and said it was constructed "at a cost of at least $150,000". Edwin Forrest Durang
Edwin Forrest Durang (April 17, 1829June 7, 1911) was an American architect. He kept offices in Philadelphia and specialized in ecclesiastical and theatrical design. Life and career Durang was born in New York City, into a distinguished theatrical family. His grandfather, John Durang (1768–1822), has been credited with being the first native-born American actor, and his parents, Charles Durang (1791–1870) and Mary White Durang (b. London, England, 1802), were also well known for their contributions to the stage. His father and uncle, Richard Ferdinand Durang, were the first to perform "The Star-Spangled Banner", and his father also worked as the director and prompter at both the Chestnut Street Theater and the American Theater in Philadelphia. After his retirement in 1853, Charles Durang taught dancing and wrote several books on dance and a history of the Philadelphia stage. Henry Disston (May 24, 1819 – March 16, 1878) was an England, English United States, American industrialist who founded the Disston Saw Works, Keystone Saw Works in 1840 and developed the surrounding Tacony, Philadelphia, Tacony neighborhood of Philadelphia to build housing for his workers. His company became the Disston Saw Works and was the top manufacturer of hand saws in the United States during the late 19th-century and early 20th century. Early life and rise to prominence Disston was born May 24, 1819, in Tewkesbury, England. The family moved to Derby, when he was four for the father's work manufacturing machines that produced lace. His father invented a machine to make a special fine lace and was invited to introduce the machine to a mill in Albany, New York.
