An independent record label (or indie label) is a record label that operates without the funding or distribution of major record labels; they are a type of small and medium-sized enterprise, small- to medium-sized enterprise, or SME. The labels and artists are often represented by trade associations in their country or region, which in turn are represented by the international trade body, the Worldwide Independent Network (WIN). Mes Aïeux () is a neo-traditional Quebec folk music group founded in 1996. Sylvain Cossette
Sylvain Cossette (born May 8, 1963) is a French-Canadian singer from Grand-Mère, Quebec (located in the Mauricie region). He was a founding member of the Quebec-based English-language band Paradox in 1984 before becoming a French-language solo artist by 1994. Career During his career he has sold over one million albums (12 Gold and Platinum), recorded thirty-two No. 1 hit songs and eight Number 1 albums, earned six Silver, Gold and Platinum Tickets, won 10 Quebec Felix Music Awards, six Socan awards and four Juno nominations, and performed in Canada and Europe in the hit stage musicals ''Notre Dame De Paris'' and ''Dracula''. Julie Masse
Julie Masse (born June 3, 1970) is a Canadian pop singer. Biography Masse was born in Greenfield Park, Quebec. She released her self-titled debut album in 1990, a French language album that made her a star in Quebec and France, with the singles "C'est Zéro", "Billy", "Sans t'oublier" and "Prends bien garde". Her second album, ''À Contre Jour'', followed in 1992. In 1993, she won the Juno Award for Best New Female Artist. She married cinematographer Sylvain Brault the same year. In 1994, she released her debut English language album, ''Circle of One'', on which she collaborated with Corey Hart (known for his early-1980s pop hits, such as " Sunglasses at Night"). Marie Denise Pelletier (born 3 April 1960) is a francophone Canadian singer. She served as President of Artisti, a copyright collective for music artists operated by Quebec's l'Union des artistes (UDA). Biography While studying literature and cinema at the CÉGEP de Rosemont, Pelletier developed her song technique under veteran Quebec singer Lucille Dumont. In 1982, she won honours at the Granby Festival of song and also first place in a CKMF-FM contest for song talent. In 1985, she recorded a 45 RPM vinyl single entitled "Échec et Mat" (Checkmate) before beginning studies at Berklee College of Music in Boston. Upon returning to Quebec, she was offered the role of Stella Spotlight in the second Quebec production of the rock opera '' Starmania''. As a cosmopolitan province, Quebec is a home to various genres of music, ranging from folk to hip hop. Music has played an important role in Quebecer culture. In the 1920s and 1930s, singer/songwriter Madam Bolduc performed comedic songs in a folk style with Irish influences.
