Rollins Band
Rollins Band was an American rock band formed in Van Nuys, California. The band was active from 1987 to 2006 and was led by former Black Flag (band), Black Flag vocalist Henry Rollins. They are best known for the songs "Low Self Opinion" and "Liar (Rollins Band song), Liar", both of which garnered heavy airplay on MTV in the early-mid 1990s. Critic Steve Huey describes their music as "uncompromising, intense, cathartic fusions of funk, post-punk, noise rock, noise, and jazz experimentalism, with Rollins shouting angry, biting self-examinations and accusations over the grind." ''Weight'' is the fourth studio album by American rock band Rollins Band, released on April 12, 1994. It featured the band's biggest hits, " Liar" and " Disconnect". Writing and recording The songs for the album were written throughout 1993, after the band completed touring for their previous release '' The End of Silence''. The writing for the songs took place in East Village, Manhattan, since all of the members of the band lived in New York, with the exception of Henry Rollins, who was based in Los Angeles. Rollins has said that he conceived several song lyrics and musical ideas on his way to band practice in New York. In a 1997 interview, he further recalled that "a lot of the initial songs, like a big hunk of them, were written really fast. Alternative Metal
Alternative metal (also known as alt-metal) is a genre of heavy metal music that combines heavy metal with influences from alternative rock and other genres not normally associated with metal. Imago Records (The Imago Recording Company) was an American independent record label, which was active during the early 1990s. It was started by Terry Ellis after he left his previous record label, Chrysalis Records. In 1990 Ann Munday was hired as Vice President and General Manager in their New York office. Several influential artists released albums through Imago, including Rollins Band, Aimee Mann, Paula Cole and Love Spit Love as well as alternative, gay hip-hop artist and rapper Sha-Key (aka Hanifah Walidah). Melvin Gibbs
Melvin Gibbs is an American bass guitarist who has appeared on close to 200 albums in diverse genres of music. Among others, Gibbs is known for working in jazz with drummer Ronald Shannon Jackson and guitarist Sonny Sharrock, and in rock music with Rollins Band and Arto Lindsay. He is a member of Harriet Tubman, with whom he was included in the ''New York Times''' best performances of 2017, and Body Meπa, recognized in ''Bandcamp Daily'''s best experimental music of 2024. Career A native of Brooklyn, New York, Gibbs attended Medgar Evers College and the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music. Chris Haskett
Chris Haskett (born 1962) is an American guitarist. He was a member of the rock band Rollins Band from 1986 to 1997 and again for the band's reunion in 2006. He has also recorded or performed with David Bowie, Foetus, Pigface, The Cassandra Complex, Tool, The Joy Thieves, and others. Biography Haskett was born in Washington, D.C. He spent 1976–1977 in the UK where he was greatly inspired by the birth of the UK punk scene. Soon after his return to the US he was recruited into seminal D.C. band The Enzymes. "Liar" is a song by Rollins Band and the lead single from their fourth album, ''Weight'', released in 1994. It was the album's only charting single and is one of the group's best known songs. Background In 2011, Rollins reported that "Liar" began during one of the first practice jam sessions with bassist Melvin Gibbs, who joined in 1993, replacing Andrew Weiss. "Liar" was a loose, humorous improvisation performed at live concerts until executives at Imago Records suggested the song had the potential to be a hit single. Rollins thought the song was a b-side that would not even be featured on ''Weight''. However, when the record label heard it, they immediately proposed it be the lead single.
