Disabled Wintersport Australia
Disabled Wintersport Australia (DWA) was established in 1978 as the Australian Disabled Skiers Federation. Its current mission is "to promote and foster the advancement of participation by people with a disability in wintersport both in Australia and overseas". DWA is a member of the Australian Paralympic Committee. DWA plays a major role in the development of Australian athletes that compete at the Winter Paralympics. Administration . Australian Paralympic Committee
Paralympics Australia (PA) previously called the Australian Paralympic Committee (APC) (1998–2019) is the National Paralympic Committee in Australia for the Paralympic Games movement. It oversees the preparation and management of Australian teams that participate at the Summer Paralympics and the Winter Paralympics. APC played a major role in Australia's successful bid to host the 2000 Sydney Paralympics. Since the 1996 Summer Paralympics, Australia has finished in the top five nations on the medal tally. Australia has participated officially in every Paralympic Games since its inauguration in 1960 except for the 1976 Winter Paralympics. The Paralympic Games are held every four years, following the Olympic Games and are governed by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC). The Paralympic Games have been contractually tied to the Olympic Games since 2001, however, they have taken place at the same venues since the 1988 Seoul Summer Games and the 1992 Albertville Winter Games. In order to compete at the Paralympics, athletes must have an eligible impairment that leads to a permanent activity limitation, and athletes will compete in the classification appropriate to their impairment. Australia At The Winter Paralympics
Australia has competed in every Winter Paralympics. In 1976, the first Games, Australia's sole competitor was Ron Finneran, but he was not an official entrant. In 1980, Kyrra Grunnsund and Peter Rickards became the first official competitors, in alpine and cross-country skiing. The number of Australian athletes increased to three, five, five and six at the next four games, respectively, and all of the athletes were alpine skiers. The participation decreased to four in 1998 and climbed back up to six in 2002. Australia won its first Winter Paralympic medals in 1992, and has medalled at every games since then. Simon Patmore
Simon Patmore, (born 29 August 1987) is an Australian Para-athletics and Para-snowboard competitor. He won a gold medal in the Men's 100m T46 at the Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games, and bronze in the Men's 200m T46 at the London 2012 Paralympic Games. At the PyeongChang 2018 Paralympic Games, Patmore won a gold medal in the Men's Snowboard Cross SB-UL and bronze in the Men's Banked Slalom SB-UL. Personal Patmore was born on 29 August 1987. He was born with Erb's palsy affecting his left arm. Para-athletics Patmore is a T46-classified competitor in Para-athletics. James Patterson (skier)
James Lawrence Paterson, is an Australian Paralympic skier who has cerebral palsy. Personal life Paterson was from Terrigal, New South Wales and a marine mechanic for Halvorsen Boats. After the 1994 Games, Paterson thanked the Terrigal community and his employer for supporting his overseas preparation. Skiing career At the 1994 Lillehammer Winter Paralympics, Paterson competed in four events and won a silver medal in the Men's Downhill LW9 event and a bronze medal in the Men's Giant Slalom LW9 event. Michael Norton (skier)
Michael Joseph Norton, (22 April 1964 – 22 August 1996) was an Australian Paralympic alpine skier. As a paraplegic sit skier, he won two gold medals at the 1994 Lillehammer Winter Paralympics. Personal Norton grew up on a dairy farm in Leongatha, Victoria. He attended Leongatha High School and left in year four. In February 1984, on the way home from work on his motorbike, he hit a rock and came off the bike near Foster in South Gippsland and became paralysed. At the time of the accident, he was an electrician. Prior to the accident, he was involved in rock climbing and white-water kayaking. After the accident, he completed his high school certificate and started an engineering degree. He ceased the degree, due to having an operation. Nathan Chivers
Nathan Chivers (born 18 July 1976) is an Australian guide skier and skis with Bart Bunting, whom he met in high school. In this role, he won two gold medals at the 2002 Salt Lake City Games in the men's downhill B1–3 and super-G B1–3 events, and a silver medal at the men's giant slalom B1–2 event. He also competed with Bunting at the 2010 Winter Games, where the pair did not win a medal. Bart Bunting
Bartholomew Bunting (born 19 July 1976) is an Australian blind Paralympic alpine skier. He started skiing in 1998 with his guide Nathan Chivers. He won two gold medals and a silver medal with Chivers at the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Paralympics and competed at the 2010 Vancouver Paralympics. Personal Bunting was born on 19 July 1976, and has been blind since birth. Bunting attended the secondary school Oakhill College. He has a degree in computer science from the University of Technology, Sydney. He was featured on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's ''X Paralympic Games'' in March 2010. Australia At The 1980 Winter Paralympics
Following the success of the first ever 1976 Winter Paralympics in Örnsköldsvik four years earlier, Norway was selected to host the Paralympic Games in 1980. Amongst the 18 nations represented, the 1980 Winter Paralympics at Geilo was the first time Australia had sent an official team. These games were originally known as the 2nd Olympic Winter Games for Disabled. Out of 299 participants (a 40% increase in participation in comparison to the first Paralympic Games), 229 men and 70 women, categorised into either amputees, blind/visually impaired and spinal cord injuries, competed in 63 events. Three sports were programmed to make up the 63 events in these games: alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, and ice sledge speed racing.
