The Paul Dirac Medal and Prize is a gold medal awarded annually by the Institute of Physics (Britain's and Ireland's main professional body for physicists) for "outstanding contributions to theoretical (including mathematical and computational) physics". The award, which includes a £1000 prize, was decided upon by the Institute of Physics in 1985, and first granted in 1987. Brian Ridley
Brian Kidd Ridley (2 March 1931 – 22 May 2024) was a British solid-state physicist specialising in semiconductor theory. He was an emeritus professor at the University of Essex. Early life and education Ridley was born on 2 March 1931. He educated at the University of Durham. He received a BSc degree in physics in 1953 and completed his doctoral studies in 1957. Career Ridley began his career as a research physicist in the solid-state physics division of the Mullard Research Laboratories in Redhill, Surrey (1956–1964). A gluon ( ) is a type of massless elementary particle that mediates the strong interaction between quarks, acting as the exchange particle for the interaction. Gluons are massless vector bosons, thereby having a spin of 1. Through the strong interaction, gluons bind quarks into groups according to quantum chromodynamics (QCD), forming hadrons such as protons and neutrons. Gluons carry the color charge of the strong interaction, thereby participating in the strong interaction as well as mediating it. Jonathan Richard "John" Ellis (born 1 July 1946) is a British-Swiss theoretical physicist. After completing his secondary education at Highgate School, he attended King's College, Cambridge from 1964, earning his PhD in theoretical (high-energy) particle physics in 1971, after having spent the academic year 1970/71 as a visiting student at CERN. After one-year post-doc positions in the SLAC Theory Group and at Caltech, he went back to CERN in 1973, first as a research fellow and from 1974 as a staff member, where he remained until he reached the fixed retirement age of 65. Michael Boris Green (born 22 May 1946) is a British physicist and a pioneer of string theory.
