Diplodactylus Tessellatus
''Diplodactylus tessellatus'', commonly known as the tessellated gecko, is a small terrestrial lizard found distributed in inland New South Wales, Queensland, Northern Territory, South Australia and the north western corner of Victoria (Australia), Victoria. The tessellated gecko is one of 26 species in the genus ''Diplodactylus'' all of which are confined to continental Australia. A small gecko varying in colour from grey to rich reddish-brown with a highly variable dorsal pattern. Taxonomy & Phylogeny The tessellated gecko was first described by a Germany, German-born British zoologist, ichthyologist, and herpetologist Albert Gunther in 1875. Albert Karl Ludwig Gotthilf Günther , also Albert Charles Lewis Gotthilf Günther (3October 18301February 1914), was a German-born British zoologist, ichthyologist, and herpetologist. Günther is ranked the second-most productive reptile taxonomist (after George Albert Boulenger) with more than 340 reptile species described. Early life and career Günther was born in Esslingen in Swabia ( Württemberg). His father was a ''Stiftungs-Commissar'' in Esslingen and his mother was Eleonora Nagel. He initially schooled at the Stuttgart Gymnasium. His family wished him to train for the ministry of the Lutheran Church for which he moved to the University of Tübingen. A brother shifted from theology to medicine, and he, too, turned to science and medicine at Tübingen in 1852. The Miocene ( ) is the first epoch (geology), geological epoch of the Neogene Period and extends from about (Ma).
