''Diplacus leptaleus'' is a species of monkeyflower known by the common name slender monkeyflower. Description ''Diplacus leptaleus'' is a small, hairy annual herb growing at ground level or erect to a maximum height near 14 centimeters. The oppositely arranged leaves are linear or lance-shaped and up to 2.5 centimeters in length. The tubular, wide-faced flower is under a centimeter long and may be magenta, white, or yellow in color, sometimes with dark spotting in the throat. Asa Gray
Asa Gray (November 18, 1810 – January 30, 1888) is considered the most important American botanist of the 19th century. His '' Darwiniana'' was considered an important explanation of how religion and science were not necessarily mutually exclusive. Gray was adamant that a genetic connection must exist between all members of a species. He was also strongly opposed to the ideas of hybridization within one generation and special creation in the sense of its not allowing for evolution. He was a strong supporter of Darwin, although Gray's theistic evolution was guided by a Creator. As a professor of botany at Harvard University for several decades, Gray regularly visited, and corresponded with, many of the leading natural scientists of the era, including Charles Darwin, who held great regard for him. Diplacus
''Diplacus'' is a plant genus in the family Phrymaceae, which was traditionally placed in family Scrophulariaceae. In the 2012 restructuring of '' Mimulus'' by Barker, ''et al''., based largely upon DNA evidence, seven species were left in ''Mimulus'', 111 placed into '' Erythranthe'' (species with axile placentation and long pedicels), 46 placed into ''Diplacus'' (species with parietal placentation and sessile flowers), two placed in '' Uvedalia'', and one each placed in '' Elacholoma'', '' Mimetanthe'', and ''Thyridia''.
