The longfin lanternfish (''Diogenichthys'' ''atlanticus'') is a species of oceanodromous lanternfish that is oviparous, and a host of '' Sarcotretes scopeli.'' Distribution and habitat It is a widespread species that lives in oceans like the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Ocean. It lives from 18 to 1,250 meters below the ocean surface. It can be found at 400 to 930 meters deep during the day, and 18 to 1,050 meters deep at night. Description It grows up to a length of 2.9 cm. It has 11 to 12 dorsal finrays, 16 to 17 anal finrays, and 14 pectoral finrays. Lanternfish
Lanternfish (or myctophids, from the Greek language, Greek μυκτήρ ''myktḗr'', "nose" and ''ophis'', "serpent") are small mesopelagic fish of the large family (biology), family Myctophidae. One of two families in the order Myctophiformes, the Myctophidae are represented by 246 species in 33 genus, genera, and are found in oceans worldwide. Lanternfishes are aptly named after their conspicuous use of bioluminescence. Their sister family, the Neoscopelidae, are much fewer in number but superficially very similar; at least one neoscopelid shares the common name "lanternfish": the large-scaled lantern fish, ''Neoscopelus macrolepidotus''. Rolf Ling Bolin
Rolf Ling Bolin (22 March 1901 – 23 August 1973) was an American academic ichthyologist. A genus of lanternfish, '' Bolinichthys'', is named for him. Biography Bolin was born on 22 March 1901 in New York City to Scandinavian American parents. He initially pursued a career in graphic arts, but then took courses in marine biology. Bolin was awarded a Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1934, and worked at Hopkins Marine Station in Pacific Grove of Monterey County, California. There he was sought for information on fishes from Ed Ricketts and John Steinbeck. He was appointed Professor of Marine Biology and Oceanography in 1949 at Stanford, where he worked until his retirement in 1967. Bolin died on 23 August 1973 in Carmel, California. Samuel Garman
Samuel Walton Garman (June 5, 1843 – September 30, 1927), or "Garmann" as he sometimes styled himself, was an American naturalist and zoologist. He became noted as an ichthyologist and herpetologist. Biography Garman was born in Indiana County, Pennsylvania, on 5 June 1843. In 1868 he joined an expedition to the American West with John Wesley Powell. He graduated from the Illinois State Normal University in 1870, and for the following year was principal of the Mississippi State Normal School. In 1871, he became professor of natural sciences in Ferry Hall Seminary, Lake Forest, Illinois, and a year later became a special pupil of Louis Agassiz. He was a friend and regular correspondent of the naturalist Edward Drinker Cope, and in 1872 accompanied him on a fossil hunting trip to Wyoming.
