Digital Fur
Digital fur is the rendering of fur using computer generated imagery techniques. The rendering of fur is technically complex, because of the geometric complexity of modelling the hair strands or grass, the complex interplay of light within the fur volume and the effects of subsurface scattering within the skin. Digital fur plays a substantial part in the creation of pseudo-photorealistic films such as ''Cats'' and ''The Lion King ''The Lion King'' is a 1994 American animated musical coming-of-age drama film directed by Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff, produced by Don Hahn, and written by Irene Mecchi, Jonathan Roberts, and Linda Woolverton. Rendering (computer Graphics)
Rendering is the process of generating a physically-based rendering, photorealistic or Non-photorealistic rendering, non-photorealistic image from input data such as 3D models. The word "rendering" (in one of its senses) originally meant the task performed by an artist when depicting a real or imaginary thing (the finished artwork is also called a "architectural rendering, rendering"). Today, to "render" commonly means to generate an image or video from a precise description (often created by an artist) using a computer program. A application software, software application or component-based software engineering, component that performs rendering is called a rendering software engine, engine, render engine, : Rendering systems, rendering system, graphics engine, or simply a renderer. A distinction is made between Real-time computer graphics, real-time rendering, in which images are generated and displayed immediately (ideally fast enough to give the impression of motion or an ...

Computer Generated Imagery
Computer-generated imagery (CGI) is a specific-technology or application of computer graphics for creating or improving images in art, printed media, simulators, videos and video games. These images are either static (i.e. still images) or dynamic (i.e. moving images). CGI both refers to 2D computer graphics and (more frequently) 3D computer graphics with the purpose of designing characters, virtual worlds, or scenes and special effects (in films, television programs, commercials, etc.). The application of CGI for creating/improving animations is called ''computer animation'', or ''CGI animation''. History The first feature film to use CGI as well as the composition of live-action film with CGI was ''Vertigo'', which used abstract computer graphics by John Whitney in the opening credits of the film. The first feature film to make use of CGI with live action in the storyline of the film was the 1973 film ''Westworld''. The first feature film to present a fully CGI character ...

Subsurface Scattering
Subsurface scattering (SSS), also known as subsurface light transport (SSLT), is a mechanism of light transport in which light that penetrates the surface of a translucent object is scattering, scattered by interacting with the Material (computer graphics), material and exits the surface potentially at a different point. Light generally penetrates the surface and gets scattered a number of times at irregular angles inside the material before passing back out of the material Diffuse reflection, at a different angle than it would have had if it had been Specular reflection, reflected ''directly'' off the surface. Subsurface scattering is important for realistic 3D computer graphics, being necessary for the rendering of materials such as marble, skin, leaf, leaves, wax and milk. If subsurface scattering is not implemented, the material may look unnatural, like plastic or metal. Rendering techniques To improve rendering efficiency, many real-time computer graphics algorithms only ...

Cats (2019 Film)
''Cats'' is a 2019 musical fantasy film based on the 1981 West End musical ''Cats'' by Andrew Lloyd Webber, which in turn was based on the 1939 poetry collection ''Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats'' by T. S. Eliot which the film is also based on/inspired by. The film was directed by Tom Hooper, in his second feature musical following ''Les Misérables'' (2012), from a screenplay by Lee Hall and Hooper. It stars James Corden, Judi Dench, Jason Derulo, Idris Elba, Jennifer Hudson, Ian McKellen, Taylor Swift, Rebel Wilson and Francesca Hayward. The film marked the feature film debut for both Derulo and Hayward. Filming took place from December 2018 to April 2019. It was theatrically released in the United Kingdom and the United States on 20 December 2019 by Universal Pictures. ''Cats'' grossed $75.5 million worldwide against a production budget of $80–100 million, resulting in an estimated loss of $71 million after ancillary costs, and was considered a box office disappo ...
