Digby Willoughby, 7th Baron Middleton
Digby Willoughby, 7th Baron Middleton (29 November 1769 – 5 November 1856), was an English nobleman and sailor. He was the eldest son of Francis Willoughby of Hesley and Octavia Fisher, and grandson of Thomas Willoughby. He entered the Royal Navy in 1782, retiring as a captain in 1840. He never married but had one illegitimate daughter, Octavia. Digby Willoughby (adventurer)
Digby Willoughby (1845–1901) was an English adventurer and mercenary. Life Willoughby left England for South Africa in 1871 to seek his fortune. During the 1879 Anglo-Zulu War, he served as an officer in the Natal Mounted Police. He then for a time acted as auctioneer's assistant, subsequently becoming partner in the firm of Willoughby & Scoones at Maritzburg, where he resided. After a short period with a theatrical company, he raised and commanded an irregular troop, "Willoughby's Horse", which saw service in the Basuto Gun War of 1880. In January 1884 Willoughby went to Madagascar, where, gaining the confidence of the Queen Ranavalona III and her husband Rainilaiarivony, the prime minister, he was appointed on 18 May general commander of the '' Hovas'', the kingdom's armed forces (18 May). Digby Wentworth Bayard Willoughby, 9th Baron Middleton
Digby Wentworth Bayard Willoughby, 9th Baron Middleton (24 August 1844 – 28 May 1922), was an English nobleman, the eldest son of Henry Willoughby, 8th Baron Middleton.Middleton at 'Burke's Peerage, Baronetage and Knightage,'' 100th Edn, London, 1953. He was educated at Eton. He served in the 1860s with the Scots Fusilier Guards, retiring with the rank of captain. On 30 July 1869 he was appointed second major in the 1st Administrative Brigade of Yorkshire (East Riding) Artillery Volunteers, of which his father the 8th Baron was honorary colonel. The 9th Baron later commanded the unit as lieutenant-colonel, became Hon Col in turn on 29 May 1879, and held the post into the 20th Century. On 5 August 1869 married Eliza Maria Gordon-Cumming (16 June 1847 – 27 April 1922 Birdsall House, Birdsall). The couple had no children. Digby Willoughby (bobsleigher)
Lieutenant colonel (United Kingdom), Lieutenant Colonel Digby Jeremie Willoughby (4 May 1934 – 27 February 2007) was a soldier and sportsman, one of a two-man bobsleigh team that broke the world record in 1961. He later became chief executive of the Cresta Run, St Moritz Tobogganing Club, a position he held for 24 years, fiercely guarding its traditions, which he saw as part of the last truly amateur sport. Early life Digby Jeremie Willoughby was born in India, the son of an officer of the Bombay Grenadiers and the Indian Political Service. He was educated at Blundell's School in Tiverton, Devon, Tiverton and the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, RMA Sandhurst. Digby Michael Godfrey John Willoughby, 12th Baron Middleton MC (1 May 1921 – 27 May 2011), was a Conservative British peer who actively opposed the House of Lords Act 1999 which expelled most hereditary peers from the House of Lords.
