Dietrich Conrad Smith (April 4, 1840 – April 18, 1914) was a United States House of Representatives, U.S. Representative from Illinois. Biography Born in East Frisia, Kingdom of Hanover, Hanover, (currently Germany), Smith immigrated to the United States with his parents, who settled in Pekin, Illinois, about 1850. He attended the public schools of Pekin, Illinois, and Quincy College (now Quincy University), Quincy, Illinois. During the American Civil War, Civil War he served in the Union Army as lieutenant in Company I, 8th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment (3 Years), Eighth Regiment, Illinois Volunteer Infantry. He left the service as captain of Company C, 139th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment, One Hundred and Thirty-ninth Regiment, Illinois Volunteer Infantry. The 139th Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry was an infantry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. It was among scores of regiments that were raised in the summer of 1864 as Hundred Days Men, an effort to augment existing manpower for an all-out push to end the war within 100 days.
