Dietmar Kolbus
Dietmar Kolbus (January 17, 1966 – July 22, 2024) was a German chess player who resided in and played for Germany and the Isle of Man. Chess career Kolbus moved to Trier in the 1980s to study computer science, and also joined the SG Trier Bundesliga Chess Team. He later sponsored the team, moving them into the 4NCL. In October 2014, Kolbus was defeated by Abhijeet Gupta at the start of the Poker Masters Isle of Man International chess tournament. Kolbus competed in the FIDE Grand Swiss Tournament 2023, where he was the bottom seed. He managed to hold draws against grandmasters Adhiban Baskaran, Adham Fawzy, and Alexandr Fier. Kolbus died on July 22, 2024 while playing at the Biel Chess Festival 2024. Rahden
Rahden is a town in the far north of North Rhine-Westphalia between Bielefeld and Bremen and between Hanover and Osnabrück. Rahden is part of the Minden-Lübbecke District in East Westphalia-Lippe. Alexandr Fier
Alexandr Hilário Takeda Sakai dos Santos Fier (born 11 March 1988) is a Brazilian chess grandmaster. He competed in the FIDE World Cup in 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015, 2017 and 2023. Career Fier won five gold medals at the Pan American Youth Chess Festival: in the Under 10 division in 1996 and 1997, the Under 12 in 2000, the Under 14 in 2002 and Under 18 in 2005. He also won the South American Junior Championship in 2006, 2008 and 2009. Fier won the Brazilian Chess Championship in 2005, 2018., 2019 (held in January 2020), and 2022. In 2006 he won the "65 Anos da Federação Paulista" tournament (São Paulo Federation 65th Anniversary) in São Paulo. The Biel International Chess Festival is an annual chess tournament that takes place in Biel/Bienne, Switzerland. It consists of two events, the Grandmaster Tournament, held with the round-robin system, and the Master Open Tournament (MTO), held with the Swiss system. The Grandmaster Tournament has taken place since 1977. Adham Fawzy (born 2000) is an Egyptian chess player. He was awarded the title Grandmaster by FIDE in 2019. As of May 2023, he is the third-highest rated active Egyptian player, and fourth-highest in the African continent. Career He won the 2018 and 2019 African Junior Chess Championship. Adhiban Baskaran (born 15 August 1992) is an Indian chess grandmaster. He was the 2008 World Under-16 Champion and the 2009 Indian champion. He is currently the 21st highest rated player in India. Career In 2007 he won the Asian under-16 championship in Tashkent. Adhiban played on the first board for the gold medal-winning Indian team at the Under-16 Chess Olympiad of 2007 and 2008. In 2011, he won the Cultural Village tournament in Wijk aan Zee which qualified him for the 2012 Tata Steel C tournament. In this latter event, he tied for 3rd–4th with Daan Brandenburg with a score of 8.5/13. The FIDE Grand Swiss Tournament 2023 was a chess tournament that formed part of the qualification cycle for the World Chess Championship 2024. It was an 11-round Swiss-system tournament with 114 players competing from 25 October to 5 November 2023 in the Isle of Man. The winner and runner-up of the tournament (Vidit Gujrathi and Hikaru Nakamura) earned the right to play in the Candidates Tournament 2024. The event was held in parallel with the FIDE Women's Grand Swiss Tournament 2023. Format The tournament has an 11-round Swiss-system tournament, Swiss format, with pairings made using the Dutch system for Swiss tournaments.
