Die Hermannsschlacht (Kleist)
''Die Hermannsschlacht'' (literally ''The Battle of Hermann'') is a 1808 drama in five acts by German author Heinrich von Kleist. It is based on the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest (9 AD) which took place between the Romans and Germanic tribes near Kalkriese in Germany. Background ''Die Hermannsschlacht'' was written in 1808, after the Prussian defeat by Napoleon I in the War of the Fourth Coalition, and was intended to be read in this context. Kleist's readers would have recognised Rome as France, the Cherusci as Germany, and the Suebi as Austria. The play has been read as Kleist's call for resistance against the French, but this has come into doubt in recent years. Plot Hermann, Prince of the Cherusci, is beset on two sides. Heinrich Von Kleist
Bernd Heinrich Wilhelm von Kleist (; 18 October 177721 November 1811) was a German poet, dramatist, novelist, short story writer and journalist. His best known works are the theatre plays ''The Prince of Homburg'', '' Das Käthchen von Heilbronn'', '' The Broken Jug'', ''Amphitryon'' and ''Penthesilea'', and the novellas '' Michael Kohlhaas'' and '' The Marquise of O.'' Kleist shot himself together with a close female friend who was terminally ill. The Kleist Prize, a prestigious prize for German literature, is named after him, as was the Kleist Theater in his birthplace Frankfurt an der Oder. Life Kleist was born into the von Kleist family in Frankfurt an der Oder in the Margraviate of Brandenburg, a province of the Kingdom of Prussia. Gert Voss
Gert Voss (10 October 1941 – 13 July 2014) was a German actor. He was known for his roles in '' Labyrinth of Lies'' (2014), '' Sometime in August'' (2009) and ' (1987). He was member of the ensemble of the Burgtheater, and a ''Kammerschauspieler''. Life Gert Voss was born in Shanghai, China, to Wilhelm Voss, an import/export merchant, and his wife Marion (née Steinhütte). He lived in China until 1948 after which the family moved to a residence near Lake Constance. He studied German and English at the University of Tübingen for several semesters, but he broke off his studies when he succeeded in an acting proficiency test. Voss took private drama lessons from 1964 to 1966 with Ellen Mahlke, followed by his first theater engagements. Meiningen Court Theatre
The Staatstheater Meiningen (State Theatre Meiningen), also called the Meiningen Theatre, is a four-division theater in the Thuringian town of Meiningen, Germany. The theater was founded in 1831 and was called ″Meininger Hoftheater″ (Meiningen Court Theatre) until 1920. The Konzerthaus Berlin is a concert hall in Berlin, the home of the Konzerthausorchester Berlin. Situated on the Gendarmenmarkt square in the central Mitte district of the city, it was originally built as a theater. The Battle of Leipzig, also known as the Battle of the Nations, was fought from 16 to 19 October 1813 at Leipzig, Saxony.
