Dick Landy
Dick Landy, nicknamed "Dandy Dick", was an American drag racer. In 1965, Landy's Dodge Coronet A/Factory Experimental (A/FX) entry, was one of the first to compete in what would later become the Funny Car class. Landy won the Street class at the Winternats in 1968, following with a win in Modified (Altered) there in 1969. At the 1970 Winternationals, he beat Herb McCandless' Plymouth Duster, when McCandless redlighted. Dodge Coronet
The Dodge Coronet is an automobile that was marketed by Dodge in seven generations, and shared nameplates with the same bodyshell with varying levels of equipment installed. Introduced as a full-size car in 1949, it was the division's highest trim line and moved to the lowest level starting in 1955 through 1959. The name was reintroduced on intermediate-sized models from the 1965 until 1976 model years. Funny Car
Funny Car is a type of drag racing vehicle and a specific racing class in organized drag racing. Funny cars are characterized by having tilt-up fiberglass or carbon fiber automotive bodies over a custom-fabricated chassis, giving them an appearance vaguely approximating manufacturers' showroom models. They also have the engine placed in front of the driver, as opposed to dragsters, which place it behind the driver. Funny car bodies typically reflect the models of newly available cars in the time period that the funny car was built. National Hot Rod Association
The National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) is a drag racing governing body, which sets rules in drag racing and hosts events all over the United States and Canada. With over 40,000 drivers in its rosters, the NHRA claims to be the largest motorsports sanctioning body in the world. The association was founded by Wally Parks in 1951 in California to provide a governing body to organize and promote the sport of drag racing. NHRA's first Nationals was held in 1955, in Great Bend, Kansas. The NHRA Winternationals (commonly called the Winternats) are an annual drag racing event held by the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) at Auto Club Raceway in Pomona, California. In 1962, under pressure from Peggy Hart (wife of track owner "Pappy" Hart) and Mickey Thompson, as well as fellow racers Shirley Shahan and Roberta Leighton, Carol Cox was the first woman allowed to race at an NHRA national event. Herb McCandless is an American Pro Stock drag racer. With a long career in racing, McCandless won NHRA's Modified Eliminator title at the 1970 Gatornats in a Plymouth Barracuda. McCandless also won the 1970 NHRA US Nationals in Pro Stock driving a 1970 Plymouth Duster for Sox and Martin. The original Plymouth Duster is a semi-fastback two-door coupe version of the compact-sized Plymouth Valiant automobile that was marketed by Plymouth in the U.S. from 1970 to 1976 model years. History The Duster coupe provided the compact-sized Plymouth Valiant with a sporty body style to attract customers. The car was a $15 million effort to update the Valiant for the 1970 model year. The Valiant badge appeared only on the first model year Dusters, and continued to be used on all the companion 4-door sedan and 2-door Valiant Scamp hardtop models. The Duster was built on the Valiant platform and shared the same front end sheet metal, but featured a different design from the cowl back. Hot rods are typically American cars that might be old, classic, or modern and that have been rebuilt or modified with large engines optimised for speed and acceleration. NHRA Summernationals
The NHRA Summernationals were an annual drag racing event run by the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA). The first annual event was held in July 1970, at York U.S. 30 Dragway near York, Pennsylvania. Subsequent events were held at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park, outside Englishtown, New Jersey. After Old Bridge Township Raceway Park ceased all drag racing operations in 2018, the event was moved to Virginia Motorsports Park, just outside Petersburg, Virginia, and the Summernationals endedreplaced by the Virginia NHRA Nationals.
