''The Diane Stapley Show'' is a Canadian music variety television series which aired on CBC Television in 1976. Premise This Winnipeg-produced series featured singer Diane Stapley who previously appeared in various CBC productions. She performed most selections on the program, generally of the theatrical, torch and MOR genres. Dave Shaw led the 16-member series house band. Torch Song
A torch song is a sentimental love song, typically one in which the singer laments an unrequited or lost love, either where one party is oblivious to the existence of the other, where one party has moved on, or where a romantic affair has affected the relationship. Middle Of The Road (music)
Middle of the road (also known by its acronym MOR) is a commercial radio format. Music associated with this term is strongly melodic and uses techniques of vocal harmony and light orchestral arrangements. The format was similar to soft adult contemporary. In the mid-late 2000s the term "middle of the road" became used by journalists as a way to describe musicians and bands such as Train and Westlife who calibrated their musical appeal to commercial, popular music taste and avoided more innovative material. Leon Bibb (musician)
Leon Bibb (February 7, 1922 – October 23, 2015) was an American-Canadian folk singer and actor. His a cappella vocals blend his classical, spiritual and blues influences. He is the father of the New York-based acoustic blues singer/songwriter Eric Bibb, and grandfather of Swedish dancer and performer Rennie Mirro. Bibb was born in Louisville, Kentucky studied voice in New York City, and worked on Broadway. His career began when he became a featured soloist of the Louisville Municipal College glee club as a student. He was one of the performers at the first Newport Folk Festival in 1959. He also had his own NBC television talk show. During the late-1950s and early-1960s, Bibb was one of a number of American entertainers, such as his good friend Paul Robeson, who were blacklisted for alleged ties to left-wing groups and causes. Dinah Christie
Dinah Barbara Christie (born December 29, 1942) is a retired Canadian actress and singer. Christie was born in London, England to actors Robert and Margot Christie, she came to Canada at the age of two with her parents and grew up in Toronto. She had a younger sister and, later, three half-siblings. At age 13, she worked as a call boy at the Stratford Festival and became an apprentice at the Festival in 1960. In 1961, she sang in a comedy revue in Toronto, directed by her father. Before she was out of her teens, she had been cast in small roles at Stratford. In 1962, aged 19, she starting singing while attending North Toronto Collegiate Institute (NTCI) and performed as a folk singer in her teens, taking voice lessons from Portia White. Christie reached Grade 13 at NTCI but did not graduate. In 1965, she was selected by Tom Kneebone to co-star in a stage revue, and the two would frequently work together for decades.
