Diana Block
Diana Block (born ) is a US-based former militant and author. During the 1970s, she joined the Prairie Fire Organizing Committee and later went underground with a group accused of buying explosives to aid the independence movement in Puerto Rico. Whilst on the run, Block had two children with her partner and fellow militant Claude Marks. They resurfaced in 1994 and Block has since published a memoir and a novel. Life Diana Block was born in the US and grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area. During the 1970s, she joined the Prairie Fire Organizing Committee and became involved in radical social movements such as feminism and the independence movement in Puerto Rico. Prairie Fire Organizing Committee
The Prairie Fire Organizing Committee is an American far left organization that evolved from the Weather Underground. Origins In 1974, the Weather Underground released the book ''Prairie Fire: The Politics of Revolutionary Anti-imperialism''. Since the Weather Underground was engaged in illegal bombings and its leaders were fugitives, it required help from aboveground supporters to distribute the book; participants in this work included Van Lydegraf and Jennifer Dohrn. Over 40,000 copies were distributed. Discussion groups were created to discuss the issues that arose from the book. This above ground organizing is how the Prairie Fire Distribution Committee was created, which in 1975 became the Prairie Fire Organizing Committee. The book's preparation was a 12-month process. It was written collaboratively and adopted as the collective statement of the Weather Underground. Independence Movement In Puerto Rico
Throughout the history of Puerto Rico, its inhabitants have initiated several movements to gain independence for the island, first from the Spanish Empire until 1898 and since then from the United States. Today, the movement is most commonly represented by the flag of the ''Grito de Lares'' ''(Cry of Lares)'' revolt of 1868. A spectrum of pro-autonomy, pro-nationalism, and pro-independence sentiments and political parties exist on the island. Fuerzas Armadas De Liberación Nacional Puertorriqueña
The Fuerzas Armadas de Liberación Nacional (English: ''Armed Forces of National Liberation'', FALN) was a Puerto Rican clandestine paramilitary organization that, through direct action, advocated independence for Puerto Rico. It carried out more than 130 bomb attacks in the United States between 1974 and 1983, including a 1975 bombing of the Fraunces Tavern in New York City that killed four people. The FALN served as the predecessor of the Boricua Popular Army. Several of the organization's members were arrested and convicted for seditious conspiracy, conspiracy to commit robbery and for firearms and explosives violations. Oscar López Rivera
Oscar López Rivera (born January 6, 1943) is a Puerto Rican activist and militant who was a member and suspected leader of the Fuerzas Armadas de Liberación Nacional Puertorriqueña (FALN), a clandestine paramilitary organization devoted to Puerto Rican independence that carried out more than 130 bomb attacks in the United States between 1974 and 1983. López Rivera was tried by the United States government for seditious conspiracy, use of force to commit robbery, interstate transportation of firearms, and conspiracy to transport explosives with intent to destroy government property. López Rivera declared himself a prisoner of war and refused to take part in most of his trial. He maintained that according to international law he was an anticolonial combatant and could not be prosecuted by the United States government. Dan Berger is an author, historian and professor at the University of Washington Bothell.
