Diageo Global Supply Centre
The Diageo Global Supply Centre is a main spirits manufacturing and bottling facility in Leven, Fife, Leven, Scotland, owned by Diageo; as well as much whisky, it bottles Smirnoff vodka. History Work began on building the site in April 1971. The site was to cost £7-8m, with 900 jobs, over 162 acres. Outline planning permission was given in November 1970, followed by approval of the DCL site in February 1971 by the Secretary of State for Scotland. Planning approval for the bottling plant was given at Cupar in August 1971. By October 1971, the cost of the site had increased to £10m, for the 24 maturation racked warehouses. Each 100,000 sq-yd (five acres) warehouse would cost £300,000. Blending began in May 1973, with bottling starting in September that year. A plant at Markinch closed in 1983, with bottling being moved to Banbeath, with the loss of 340 workers while 220 were transferred to Leven. In 1985 site had 1100 workers. The Distillers Company plc was a leading Scotch whisky company and, at one time, a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index. It was taken over in 1986 by Guinness & Co. and is now part of Diageo. History The Distillers Company origins lie in a trade association known as the Scotch Distillers' Association formed by Menzies, Barnard & Craig, John Bald & Co., John Haig & Co., MacNab Bros, Robert Mowbray and Macfarlane & Co. in 1865. The Scotch Whisky Research Institute (SWRI) is the main, and only, research institute of the scotch whisky industry in Scotland. History It was founded on 30 September 1974 as Pentlands Scotch Whisky Research, at the North British Distillery. It changed to its current name in October 1995. It moved to its present site on 1 August 1997. Scotch whisky is the UK's fifth-biggest export, and the UK's largest food and drink commodity. Single malt Scotch refers to single malt whisky made in Scotland. To qualify for this category, a whisky must have been distilled at a single distillery using a pot still distillation process and made from a mash of malted barley. Therefore, a single malt means that the whisky has not been blended elsewhere with whisky from other distilleries. As with any Scotch whisky, a single malt Scotch must be distilled in Scotland and matured in oak casks in Scotland for at least three years, although most single malts are matured longer.
