''Diabelli Variations'' is an album by Uri Caine performing Ludwig van Beethoven's Diabelli Variations with the Concerto Köln which was recorded in 2002 and released on the Winter & Winter label. Reception In his review for Allmusic, Alex Henderson notes that "''Diabelli Variations'' is strictly for broad-minded listeners who have no problem with the Euro-classical and jazz worlds interacting". On All About Jazz C. Michael Bailey said "Like his previous forays into the classical realm, Caine willingly combines classical and jazz elements, seasoning the festivities with a bit of barrelhouse boogie woogie in one place, a bit of Harlem Stride in another, and a bit of Bill Evans impressionism in yet another. Uri Caine
Uri Caine (born June 8, 1956) is an American classical music, classical and jazz pianist and composer from Philadelphia. Biography Early years Caine was born on June 8, 1956, in Philadelphia, to Burton Caine (1928–2023), a professor at Temple University Beasley School of Law, Temple Law School, and poet Shulamith Wechter Caine. He began playing piano at age seven, and studied with French jazz pianist Bernard Peiffer at 12. He later studied at the University of Pennsylvania, where he came under the tutelage of George Crumb. He also gained a greater familiarity with classical music in this period and worked at clubs in Philadelphia. Caine played professionally after 1981, and by 1985 had his recording debut with the Rochester-Gerald Veasley band. In the 1980s, he moved to New York City, where he continues to live. William Kinderman
William Andrew Kinderman (born 1 November 1952) is an American author and music scholar who plays the piano. Life Born in Philadelphia, Kinderman studied music and philosophy at Dickinson College in Pennsylvania and later the same subjects at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna and the University of Vienna. He studied musicology at Yale University and the University of California, Berkeley. He held a professorship at the University of Victoria in British Columbia, Canada, has taught at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and currently is professor and inaugural Leo and Elaine Krown Klein Chair of Performance Studies, Herb Alpert School of Music, University of California, Los Angeles. ''The Penguin Guide to Jazz'' is a reference work containing an encyclopedic directory of jazz recordings on CD which were (at the time of publication) currently available in Europe or the United States. The first nine editions were compiled by Richard Cook and Brian Morton, two chroniclers of jazz resident in the United Kingdom. Concerto Köln
Concerto Köln is an ensemble specialising in music of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The group formed in 1985, one of many groups associated with the surging interest in period instruments in that decade. Its members consisted mainly of recent graduates of College or university school of music, conservatories from across Europe. They began touring the Continent, often making appearances at major festivals. In 1992 they founded the Cologne Festival of Early Music with the aid of Deutschland Radio. They receive no government subsidy, subsidies, and do not have a permanent Conductor (music), conductor, though the group has an artistic director, Martin Sandhoff. The ''33 Variations on a waltz by Anton Diabelli'', Op. 120, commonly known as the ''Diabelli Variations'', is a set of variations for the piano written between 1819 and 1823 by Ludwig van Beethoven on a waltz composed by Anton Diabelli. It forms the first part of Diabelli's publication '' Vaterländischer Künstlerverein'', the second part consisting of 50 variations by 50 other composers. It is often considered to be one of the greatest sets of variations for keyboard along with Bach's '' Goldberg Variations''. The music writer Donald Tovey called it "the greatest set of variations ever written" and pianist Alfred Brendel has described it as "the greatest of all piano works".
