Ludwig Devrient
Ludwig Devrient (15 December 178430 December 1832) was a German actor, noted for his playing in the works of Shakespeare and Schiller. Devrient, who was born in Berlin, left a commercial career for the stage in 1804. He joined a travelling theatrical company, and made his first appearance on the stage at Gera as the messenger in Schiller's '' Braut von Messina''. By the interest of Count Brühl, he appeared at Rudolstadt as Franz Moor in Schiller's ''Die Räuber'', so successfully that he obtained a permanent engagement at the ducal theatre in Dessau, where he played until 1809. He then received a call to Breslau, where he remained for six years. Such was his success in the title-parts of several of Shakespeare's plays, that the leading actor August Wilhelm Iffland began to fear for his own reputation; yet that artist was generous enough to recommend the young actor as his only possible successor. Karl August Devrient
Karl August Devrient (5 April 17973 August 1872) was a German stage actor best known for performances of Schiller and Shakespeare. He was related to other notable German actors, including: * his uncle Ludwig; * his brothers Philipp Eduard and Gustav Emil; * his wife, operatic soprano Wilhelmine Schröder-Devrient; * his sons, and Max; * his nephew, Otto. There is a collection relating to his life at the Österreichisches Theatermuseum. Biography Devrient was born in Berlin. Eduard Devrient
(Philipp) Eduard Devrient (11 August 18014 October 1877) was a German baritone, libretto, librettist, playwright, actor, theatre director, and theatre reformer and historian. Devrient came from a theatrical family. His uncle was Ludwig Devrient and his brother Karl August Devrient, Karl was the first husband of Wilhelmine Schröder-Devrient. He was born and studied in Berlin and performed in a number of German opera houses between 1819 and 1834, when he lost his singing voice and turned his attention to writing and acting. From 1844-6 he worked in Dresden as actor/director, and he directed the Hoftheater in Karlsruhe from 1852 until his retirement in 1870. Wilhelmine Schröder-Devrient
Wilhelmine Schröder-Devrient, born Wilhelmine Schröder (6 December 180426 January 1860), was a German operatic soprano. As a singer, she combined a rare quality of tone with dramatic intensity of expression, which was as remarkable on the concert platform as in opera. Biography Schröder was born in Hamburg, the daughter of the actress Sophie Schröder and the tenor Friedrich Schröder. The poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was her 2nd cousin. Her first role was at the age of 15 as Aricia in Schiller's translation of Racine's ''Phèdre'', and in 1821, aged 17, she was received with so much enthusiasm as Pamina in Mozart's ''The Magic Flute'' that her future career in opera was assured. Otto Devrient
Otto Devrient (born 3 October 1838 in Berlin; † 23 June 1894 in Stettin) was a German actor and playwright. Devrient was the son of Philipp Eduard Devrient. He first went on stage in 1856, training in Stuttgart, Berlin and Leipzig. In 1863, he entered the Hoftheater in Karlsruhe, and moved to the Hoftheater in Weimar in 1873 as character role actor and director. There, he made an impression with his staging of Goethes '' Faust''. In 1876, he became chief director of the Hoftheater in Mannheim, in 1877 intendant of the new municipal theatre in Frankfurt, and after a tour through Berlin, Cologne, and Düsseldorf, he settled in Jena, where he received a PhD h.c..
