Devon Xtreme
The Devon Xtreme are a junior "A" ice hockey franchise in the North Division of the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL). The team debuted as an expansion franchise in the 2024–25 season. The team plays its home games in the Dale Fisher Arena, which opened in September 2024. The team hired Kelly Buchberger as its general manager and head coach. Devon, Alberta
Devon is a town in the Edmonton Metropolitan Region of Alberta, Canada. It is approximately southwest of Edmonton, the provincial capital, along the southern bank of the North Saskatchewan River. History Devon owes its existence to one of the largest oil discoveries in the world. On February 13, 1947, the Imperial Leduc No. 1 well struck oil, and the new town of Devon was constructed shortly thereafter by Imperial Oil to accommodate its workers. The company was determined that the town would be well-planned, and Devon holds the distinction of being the first Canadian community to be approved by a regional planning commission. Alberta Junior Hockey League
The Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) is an Alberta-based Junior A ice hockey league that belongs to the Canadian Junior Hockey League (CJHL). It was formed as a five-team league in 1964. The 2023–24 season began with 16 teams, however 5 teams did not finish the season after it was announced that they planned to join the BCHL in the 2024–25 season. The regular season league champions receive the Dave Duchak Trophy. The playoff champions receive the Inter Pipeline Cup (previously known as the Carling O'Keefe trophy and Gas Drive Cup). The winner of the AJHL playoffs continues on to play in the Centennial Cup tournament, which determines Canadian Junior A champion. Junior ice hockey is amateur-level ice hockey for 16 to 20 year-old players. National Junior teams compete annually for the IIHF World Junior Championship. 2024–25 AJHL Season
The 2024–25 AJHL season was the 61st season of the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL). Competition began on 24 August 2024 with a 35-game exhibition season, followed by a 54-game regular season which ran from 13 September 2024 to 15 March 2025. The Calgary Canucks finished the regular season in first place overall, and went on to win the AJHL championship Inter Pipeline Cup and the national championship 2025 Centennial Cup. The Canucks hosted the national championship as well as the 2024 AJHL showcase. Whitecourt Wolverines goaltender, Zac Onyskiw, was named most valuable player by the AJHL and the CJHL. Kelly Buchberger
Kelly Michael Buchberger (born December 2, 1966) is a Canadian professional ice hockey coach and former player. He played for several National Hockey League teams from 1986 to 2004. As a coach, he has been an assistant for the New York Islanders of the National Hockey League (NHL) and a head coach of the Tri City Americans of the Western Hockey League (WHL). Playing career Buchberger has played for the Edmonton Oilers, Atlanta Thrashers, Los Angeles Kings, Phoenix Coyotes, and the Pittsburgh Penguins. He also played minor hockey with the Western Hockey League Moose Jaw Warriors and pro hockey with the American Hockey League Nova Scotia Oilers. The Canadian Junior Hockey League (CJHL) is an association of Canadian junior ice hockey#Junior A, junior A ice hockey leagues and teams and was formed in November 1993, emerging from the Canada West Association of Junior 'A' Hockey.
