Deua National Park
Deua is a national park located in New South Wales, Australia, south of Sydney, and east of Canberra. The nearest towns on the coast are Batemans Bay, Moruya and Narooma. A remote wilderness area of escarpments and gullies, waterfalls, limestone caves, pockets of pinkwood rainforest and outstanding eucalyptus scenery. Deua is an important refuge for plant and animal species, many listed as threatened. This park is traditionally associated with Aboriginal people. Flora Common eucalyptus species include black ash, monkey gum, messmate and white ash. More rare species include the Jilliga ash and Mongamulla mallee. High altitude rainforests occur in gullies protected from fire. They are dominated by the pinkwood, hard water fern and soft tree fern. Deua River
The Deua River, being the main perennial river of the Moruya River catchment, is located in the South Coast region of New South Wales, Australia. Course and features The Deua River rises about southeast of Bendethera Mountain, on the eastern slopes of the Badja Range, part of the Great Dividing Range, within Deua National Park, in rugged and thickly forested ranges south of Braidwood. The river flows generally south, west, north, northeast, south southeast and east, making almost a complete circle, and is joined by fourteen minor tributaries, before becoming the Moruya River near Kiora. The river descends over its course. The lower reaches of the river are estuarine by nature and are called the Moruya River, while the freshwater reaches are called the Deua River. Araluen is a small town near Braidwood in the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales, Australia, in Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council. Merricumbene
Merricumbene is a locality in the Eurobodalla Shire, New South Wales, Australia. It is located about 43 km south of Braidwood and 40 km northwest of Moruya in the valley of the Deua River. At the , it had a population of 19. The area now known as Merricumbene lies on the traditional lands of Yuin people. The National Museum of Australia has a breastplate made by settlers, around 1845, for "Timothy, Chief of Merricumbene". The locality was site of gold mining and there was a mining village of the same name. Alluvial gold mining appears to have begun around March 1859. The Moruya or Deua River Goldfield was proclaimed on 31 August 1865. A number of small portions of land exist on both sides of the river, indicating that the mining settlement occupied both banks of the river, over a significant length, below the confluence of the river with Araluen Creek.
