Detective Branch
The Detective Branch (; abbreviated as DB) is a specialized unit of the Bangladesh Police. It mostly deals with investigative activities and special operations in sensitive cases and places. The main task of the detectives of this unit is to collect the information behind the news from the grass root level for the purpose of investigating the events of any serious hidden crime or unsolved historical crime. Also, if necessary, they arrest those who are suspicious individuals. History On 1 July 2016, Intelligence Branch Assistant Commissioner Rabiul Karim was shot dead by terrorists in the July 2016 Dhaka attack. According to Human Rights Watch, there is extensive documentation of human rights violations by the Detective Branch and the Rapid Action Battalion. July 2016 Dhaka Attack
On the night of 1 July 2016, at 21:20 Bangladesh Standard Time ( UTC+06:00), five terrorists took hostages and opened fire on the Holey Artisan Bakery in Gulshan Thana jurisdiction in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The terrorists entered the bakery with crude bombs, machetes, pistols, and took several dozen hostages (foreigners and locals). In the immediate response, while Dhaka Metropolitan Police tried to regain control of the bakery, two police officers were shot dead by the assailants. 29 people were killed, including 20 hostages (17 foreigners and 3 locals), two police officers, five terrorists, and two bakery staff. Wari Thana
Wari () is an upscale historical neighbourhood and a thana (police jurisdiction) in Dhaka District in Dhaka Division, Bangladesh. Located in the Old Dhaka quarter, it is the first planned neighbourhood in Dhaka city, established in the late 19th century. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (), popularly abbreviated as BNP (), is a major List of political parties in Bangladesh, political party in Bangladesh. Munshi Atiqur Rahman
Munshi Atiqur Rahman is a retired Bangladesh Police officer who served as an Assistant Superintendent of Police in the Criminal Investigation Department. He was charged and convicted for attempting to cover up the 2004 Dhaka grenade attack. Career Rahman led the Criminal Investigation Department in raiding the home of Maulana Abdur Rahman, leader of Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami Bangladesh, in January 1999 after the attempted assassination of Shamsur Rahman. Shamim Reza Rubel Murder
The Shamim Reza Rubel murder is a murder of private university student that took place in police custody and created a landmark legal case in Bangladesh. History Incident Shamim Reza Rubel was a BBA student of Independent University, Bangladesh, a private university. On 23 July 1998 he was taken from his home in Siddeswari by undercover members of Detective Branch of Bangladesh Police who started beating him immediately and accused him of having illegal weapons. He was taken to the Detective Branch office in Mintu road. He was tortured in custody and forced to admit he had illegal weapons. They took him back to his house to recover the weapons but could not find any. Rubel admitted that he confessed to stop the torture. The continued to beat him and his screams could be heard in the neighborhood. He was taken back to the Detective Branch and there he died in custody.
