Destroyer Of Worlds (album)
''Destroyer of Worlds'' is the tenth studio album by Swedish extreme metal band Bathory. It was released on 9 October 2001 through Black Mark Production, over five years after the previous album ''Blood on Ice'' (1996), marking the longest period between studio albums by Bathory. Quorthon performs all instruments on this album, similarly to how he did on '' Twilight of the Gods'' and all albums after ''Destroyer of Worlds''. Background The album's title is taken from a famous quote by J. Robert Oppenheimer about the atomic bomb: "I am become death, destroyer of worlds", which was itself quoted from verse 32 of chapter 11 in the Bhagavad Gita, spoken by Vishnu. Stylistically, ''Destroyer of Worlds'' is a cross between the Viking metal of Bathory's 1988–1991 period and the thrash metal style of ''Requiem'' and ''Octagon''. Bathory (band)
Bathory was a Swedish extreme metal band formed in Vällingby in March 1983. Named after Hungarian countess Elizabeth Báthory, they are considered pioneers of black metal (alongside Venom, Hellhammer and Mercyful Fate) and Viking metal. The book '' Lords of Chaos'' described Bathory's first four albums as "the blueprint for Scandinavian black metal." The band stopped performing live early on in its career and never toured; frontman, founder and main songwriter Tomas "Quorthon" Forsberg was the sole constant member, and was at times responsible for all instruments. Twilight Of The Gods (album)
''Twilight of the Gods'' is the sixth studio album by Swedish extreme metal band Bathory. It continues the exploration of the newly created Viking metal style, and also displays heavy epic doom and classical influences; it is titled after an opera by Wagner. It is a mid-tempo, more acoustic album than previous Bathory releases, though it follows on from '' Hammerheart''. Of significance is Quorthon's total control of the album, playing all electric and acoustic guitar, keyboards, bass, and drum programming. The background vocals are a particular feature of the album, with Quorthon multi-tracking himself, as he did on ''Hammerheart'', though on this album he sounds more like a chorus than previously. ''Requiem'' is the seventh studio album by Swedish extreme metal band Bathory. It eschews the Viking metal style of Bathory's three previous releases for a thrash metal style that recalls many of the bands that initially influenced Bathory. Viking Metal
Viking metal is a subgenre of heavy metal music characterized by a lyrical and thematic focus on Norse mythology, Norse religion, Norse paganism, and the Viking Age.
