Dessalines ( ht, Desalin) wrongly referred to as ''Marchand-Dessalines'' ( ht, Machan Desalin), is a commune in the Artibonite department of Haiti. It is named after Jean-Jacques Dessalines, a leader of the Haitian Revolution and the first ruler of independent Haiti. It is known as the First Black Capital of the New World. Jean-Jacques Dessalines
Jean-Jacques Dessalines (Haitian Creole: ''Jan-Jak Desalin''; ; 20 September 1758 – 17 October 1806) was a leader of the Haitian Revolution and the first ruler of an independent Haiti under the 1805 constitution. Under Dessalines, Haiti became the first country in the Americas to permanently abolish slavery. He led a genocidal campaign against white Haitians in 1804. Initially regarded as governor-general, Dessalines was later named Emperor of Haiti as Jacques I (1804–1806) by generals of the Haitian Revolution Army and ruled in that capacity until being assassinated in 1806. He has been referred to as the father of the nation of Haiti. Dessalines served as an officer in the French army when the colony was fending off Spanish and British incursions. The Haitian Revolution (french: révolution haïtienne ; ht, revolisyon ayisyen) was a successful insurrection by self-liberated slaves against French colonial rule in Saint-Domingue, now the sovereign state of Haiti. The revolt began on 22 August 1791, and ended in 1804 with the former colony's independence. It involved black, biracial, French, Spanish, British, and Polish participants—with the ex-slave Toussaint Louverture emerging as Haiti's most prominent general. Artibonite (French) or Latibonit ( Haitian Creole) is one of the ten departments of Haiti located in central Haiti. With an area of 4,887 km2 it is Haiti's largest department. As of 2015, its estimated population was 1,727,524. The region is the country's main rice-growing area. The main cities are Gonaïves (the capital) and Saint-Marc. Petite Rivière De L'Artibonite
Petite Rivière de l'Artibonite ( ht, Ti Rivyè Latibonit) is a commune in the Dessalines Arrondissement, in the Artibonite department of Haiti. It is located in the Artibonite Valley, with the center of the town on a bluff overlooking the Artibonite River. One of the important battles of the Haitian Revolution (1791–1804) was fought here at Crete Pierrot; Jean-Jacques Dessalines ravaged the French army led by Rochambeau. The town is the site of Palais de la Belle Rivière, a palace built from 1816 to 1820 by Henri Christophe. Its construction was never finished. The commune () is the third-level divisions of Haiti. The 10 departments have 42 arrondissements, which are divided into 144 communes and then into 571 communal sections.
