Des Dans
Desmond Keith Dans (24 November 1924 – 2 January 2014) was an Australian trade unionist and politician who was a Labor Party member of the Legislative Council of Western Australia from 1971 to 1989, representing South Metropolitan Province. He served as a minister in the government of Brian Burke. Dans was born in Perth to Mary (née Frances) and Keith Dans. He moved to Kalgoorlie as a child, where he attended a convent school before going on to the Kalgoorlie School of Mines. Dans enlisted in the Royal Australian Naval Reserve in 1942, and served as a stoker aboard HMAS ''Hobart''. After the war's end, he joined the merchant marine, and became involved with the Seamen's Union. He served as state secretary of the union from 1959 to 1971. Dans was elected to parliament at the 1971 state election. He was made leader of the Labor Party in the Legislative Council in 1976, and elevated to the shadow cabinet in 1978. Ken McIver
Kenneth Finlay McIver (26 October 1928 – 23 September 1988) was an Australian politician who served in the Parliament of Western Australia between 1968 and 1988. He represented Northam and Avon for the Labor Party. Prior to entering politics, McIver spent over 20 years as a train driver with the Western Australian Government Railways (WAGR). When the Fremantle line reopened in 1983, McIver drove the first passenger train along the line with Premier Brian Burke in the driver's cab with him. Pam Beggs
Pamela Anne Beggs (née Austin; born 23 May 1947) is a former Australian politician who was a Labor Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1983 to 1993, representing the seat of Whitford. Beggs was born in Inverell, a country town in northern New South Wales, and raised in country Western Australia, attending primary school in Greenbushes and high school in Bridgetown and Bunbury. After leaving school, she served in the Women's Royal Australian Air Force (WRAAF) for a period, and subsequently worked as a dietician and as a laboratory assistant. After her marriage in 1972, she and her husband operated a roadhouse near Geraldton for a period, later moving to the northern suburbs of Perth. Peter Dowding
Peter McCallum Dowding SC (born 6 October 1943) is an Australian lawyer and former politician who served as the 24th Premier of Western Australia, from 25 February 1988 until his forced resignation on 12 February 1990. He was a member of parliament from 1980 to 1990. Dowding graduated from the University of Western Australia with a Bachelor of Laws, and he subsequently worked as a solicitor and barrister. In 1980, he was elected to the North Province of the Western Australian Legislative Council, representing the Labor Party. He entered cabinet when Labor won the 1983 state election, and changed ministries several times over the ensuing years due to cabinet reshuffles. At the 1986 state election, Dowding transferred to the Legislative Assembly, winning the safe seat of Maylands. Gordon Masters
Gordon Edgar Masters (born 30 August 1931) is a former Australian politician who was a Liberal Party member of the Legislative Council of Western Australia from 1974 to 1989, representing West Province. He was a minister in the governments of Sir Charles Court and Ray O'Connor. Masters was born in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, England, to Winnifred (née Batchelor) and Edgar John Masters. He attended Berkhamsted School and the Hertfordshire Agricultural College, and then farmed locally until 1962, when he emigrated to Australia. Living on the outskirts of Perth, Masters purchased a contracting business, and later diversified into beef farming. 1989 Western Australian State Election Elections were held in the state of Western Australia on 4 February 1989 to elect all 57 members to the Legislative Assembly and all 34 members to the Legislative Council. The Labor government, led by Premier Peter Dowding, won a third term in office against the Liberal Party, led by Opposition Leader Barry MacKinnon. The result was a major swing against the Labor Party, coming in the wake of revelations of dealings between Government and business that came to be known as WA Inc. The redistribution that took place in 1988, based upon the ''Acts Amendment (Electoral Reform) Act 1987'' which abolished several country and outer metropolitan electorates while creating new metropolitan ones, makes it difficult to assess how Labor would have performed on the old boundaries—while it lost four seats, it gained one Liberal-held seat and won several of the new seats, so in net terms, it only lost one seat despite the massive swing and the low two-party-preferred result.
