Dersu Uzala
Dersu Uzala (; – 1908) was a Nanai trapper and hunter in the Okhotsk–Manchurian taiga. He worked as a guide for Vladimir Arsenyev, who immortalized him in his 1923 book '' Dersu Uzala''. The book was adapted into two feature films, with the version by Akira Kurosawa being the better known one. Dersu identified himself to Arsenyev as Nanai, and in the 1970s a Nanai named Fyodor Uza proudly spoke of him as a relative. However, another local historian speculated that he was Udege, pointing out that the clothing, language, and customs attributed to Dersu by Arsenyev are closer to Udege than Nanai. Life The Russian explorer Vladimir Arsenyev started his expeditions to the forests of the Far East in the area of Ussuri in 1902. Dersu Uzala (1961 Film)
''Dersu Uzala'' () is a 1961 Soviet Union, Soviet film adapted from the Dersu Uzala (book), book by Vladimir Arsenyev about his travels in the Russian Far East with the native trapper Dersu Uzala. The film was directed by Agasi Babayan from a screenplay by screenwriter Igor Bolgarin. The film starred actors Adolf Shestakov and Kasym Zhakibayev. Plot The young Russian scientist Vladimir Arsenyev conducts research on the Ussuri krai, Ussuri region of the Russian Empire. During his expedition in the taiga, he meets the hunter Dersu Uzala, who becomes his guide and loyal friend. 4142 Dersu-Uzala, provisional designation ', is a Hungaria asteroid, sizable Mars-crosser and potentially slow rotator from the innermost region of the asteroid belt, approximately in diameter. It was discovered by Czech astronomer Zdeňka Vávrová at Kleť Observatory on 28 May 1981. The rare A-type asteroid has a rotation period of 140 hours. It was named after the Siberian trapper and hunter Dersu Uzala. Orbit and characterization ''Dersu-Uzala'' is a member of the dynamical Hungaria group of asteroids, which form the innermost dense concentration of asteroids in the Solar System. It orbits the Sun in the inner asteroid belt at a distance of 1.6–2.2 AU once every 2 years and 8 months (965 days; semi-major axis of 1.91 AU). Arsenyev () is a town in Primorsky Krai, Russia, located about northeast of Vladivostok, the administrative center of the krai. As of the 2010 Census, its population was 56,750. It was known as ''Semyonovka'' until 1952. History The history of Arsenyev begins in 1895, when the settlement of Semyonovka () was founded. The first settlement dwellers were the Old Believers.
