Derry Celtic Football Club was a association football, football club from Derry, Ireland. History The club, formed as St Columb's Hall in 1890, changing to St Columb's Hall Celtic in 1893, and Derry Celtic in 1899, was once the primary team in the city, but was voted out of the Northern Ireland Football League, Irish League in 1913 and is now defunct. As St Columb's Hall Celtic, the club reached the Irish Cup final in the 1897–98 season, losing 0–2 to Linfield F.C., Linfield. The club competed in the Irish League for the first time in 1900–01, finishing its first season without a single win. Things began to improve in the next few seasons for Derry Celtic: the club picked up its first win in the 1901–02 season and achieved 6th place. They followed this up by finishing 5th in the 1902–03 season; however, this would prove to be Celtic's most successful season, only ever climbing to 5th once again in the 1909–10 season. The Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium () is a municipal Association football, football stadium in Derry, Northern Ireland. It is the home ground of League of Ireland team Derry City F.C., (temporarily) NIFL Championship team Institute F.C., Institute, and also to NIWFA Championship Ladies Team Foyle Belles FC. Celtic Park () is a GAA stadium in Derry, Northern Ireland. With a capacity of about 18,000, the ground is the primary home of Derry's hurling and Gaelic football teams. Home football games are also sometimes held in Owenbeg, Dungiven. Hurling games, on occasion, take place at Lavey or Fr. McNally Park, Banagher. As well as staging inter-county matches, it is often used to host Derry football and hurling games at the club level. Bernard Donaghey
Bernard Donaghey (23 December 1882 – 1 July 1916), sometimes known as Barney Donaghey, was an Irish professional footballer, who played as an inside forward in the Football League for Burnley and Manchester United. He also played in the Scottish League for Hibernian and in his native Ireland for Derry Celtic (four spells), Ulster, Belfast Celtic and Glentoran. Donaghey was capped by Ireland at international level and represented the Irish League. Personal life Donaghey was a Catholic and was married. Prior to the First World War, Donaghey was a reservist in the British Army and in early 1915, during the second year of the war, he enlisted as a private in the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. He saw action at Gallipoli and was wounded in the head by shrapnel and evacuated to a hospital in Tanta, Egypt. The Derry County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) () or Derry GAA is one of the 32 county boards of the GAA in Ireland. It is responsible for Gaelic games in County Londonderry in Northern Ireland (the GAA refers to the county as Derry). The county board is also responsible for the Derry county teams. Football is the most popular of the county board's Gaelic games.
