Derepodichthys
The cuskpout (''Derepodichthys alepidotus'') is a species of marine ray-finned fish belonging to the family Zoarcidae, the eelpouts. It is the only species in the monospecific genus ''Derepodichthys'' and is found in the eastern North Pacific Ocean. Taxonomy The cuskpout was first formally described in 1896 by the American ichthyologist Charles Henry Gilbert with its type locality given as off Queen Charlotte Island in British Columbia. Gilbert placed his new species in a new monospecific genus ''Derepodichthys''. It was originally considered to be a taxonomically unique species and was classified in the monotypic family Derepodichthyidae, which was thought to be intermediate between the eelpouts and the cusk eels in the family Ophidiidae. It was only known from the holotype but further specimens were collected between the 1960s and 1980s which allowed it to be redescribed by M. The eelpouts are the ray-finned fish family (biology), family Zoarcidae. As the common name suggests, they are somewhat eel-like in appearance. All of the 300 species are ocean, marine and mostly bottom-dwelling, some at great depths. Eelpouts are predominantly found in the Northern Hemisphere. The Arctic, north Pacific and north Atlantic oceans have the highest concentration of species; however, species are found around the globe. Lycodinae
Lycodinae is a subfamily of marine ray-finned fish belonging to the Family (biology), family Zoarcidae, the eelpouts. These eelpouts are found are in all the world's oceans, with a number of species being found off southern South America. Taxonomy Lycodinae was first proposed as a taxonomic grouping in 1861 by the American zoologist Theodore Gill. The subfamily is classified within the eelpout family, Zoarcidae part of the suborder Zoarcoidei within the order Scorpaeniformes. The name of the subfamily derives from its type genus, ''Lycodes'', which means "wolf-like" and refers to the then presumed close relationship of that taxon to the wolffish. Charles Henry Gilbert
Charles Henry Gilbert (December 5, 1859 in Rockford, Illinois – April 20, 1928 in Palo Alto, California) was a pioneer ichthyologist and Fisheries science, fishery biologist of particular significance to natural history of the western United States. He collected and studied fishes from Central America north to Alaska and described many new species. Later he became an expert on Pacific salmon and was a noted conservation movement, conservationist of the Pacific Northwest. Carl Leavitt Hubbs (October 19, 1894 – June 30, 1979) was an American ichthyologist. Biography Early life Carl Leavitt Hubbs was born in Williams, Arizona, to Charles Leavitt and Elizabeth () Hubbs. His father had a wide variety of jobs (farmer, iron mine owner, newspaper owner). The family moved several times before settling in San Diego where he got his first taste of natural history. After his parents divorced in 1907, he lived with his mother, who opened a private school in Redondo Beach, California.
