Derby Nacional
The Derby Nacional is a Peruvian Thoroughbred horse race held annually at Hipódromo de Monterrico in Lima, Peru. Open to three-year-olds, the Peruvian Derby is raced on dirt over a distance of 2400 metres (approximately miles). Held in late November/early December, it is the third leg of the Peruvian Quadruple Crown. The race was inaugurated in 1903 at Hipódromo de Santa Beatriz, the race 1940 it was moved to the Hipódromo de San Felipe which hosted it until 1961 when it was shifted to its present location at Hipódromo de Monterrico. Hipódromo De Monterrico
The Hipódromo de Monterrico is a Thoroughbred horse racing facility opened in 1960 in Lima, Peru. Operated by the Jockey Club del Peru, it has a one and one-eight mile dirt racetrack with a one-mile inside track for grass, turf racing. Santorín (horse)
Santorín (4 August 1970-19 December 1993) was a Peruvian Thoroughbred racehorse who was the first to win the Peruvian Quadruple Crown and is known as ''. He went on to win the Gran Premio Carlos Pellegrini on 4 November 1973 by 13 lengths, a victory that is stated to have saved Peruvian horse racing. Santorín is regarded as the most important racehorse in Peruvian history and has a monument and race named after him at the Hipódromo de Monterrico. Santorín died on 19 December 1993, and he was buried at his owner's Haras Barlovento, where there now stands a museum dedicated to him. The Clásico Santorín is a Group 3 race named after Santorín, run over 2800 meters on turf for horses three years old or older at Hipódromo de Monterrico. Grozny (horse)
Grozny (1995–2000) was a gray racehorse and Peruvian Triple Crown winner. He died in 2000. Trainer Fernando Chang considered Grozny the best horse he ever trained, and one of the best he ever saw. Assistant trainer Félix Banda also considered Grozny his best horse, and stated that he was fast and agile and always gave his all in a race. During his triple crown run, Grozny was owned by stud Temsa, trained by Fernando Chang, and ridden by David Cora. Background Grozny was bred by Haras Monterrico, sired by Privato out of Lady Tere by Niobrara. His dam never won a race, and his pedigree was considered subpar.
