Denton Offutt
Denton Offutt (1805 – 1860) was an American general store operator who hired future President Abraham Lincoln for his first job as an adult in New Salem, Illinois. Offutt was the son of Samuel and Elizabeth Offutt and was born in Frederick County, Maryland. Denton attended school in Kentucky, though he was more interested in business than book learning. In 1829, he sold his share in the family home to his brother Samuel and also sold his slave George, as well as all the property acquired from the will of his father. After Lincoln and his family had moved to Illinois from Indiana in 1830, he was hired by Offutt near Decatur, Illinois to take a boatload of cargo downriver to New Orleans for a sum of $60 and 50 cents per day. New Salem, Menard County, Illinois
Lincoln's New Salem State Historic Site is a reconstruction of the former village of New Salem in Menard County, Illinois, where Abraham Lincoln lived from 1831 to 1837. While in his twenties, the future U.S. President made his living in this village as a boatman, soldier in the Black Hawk War, general store owner, postmaster, surveyor, and rail splitter, and was first elected to the Illinois General Assembly. Lincoln left New Salem for Springfield in 1837, and the village was generally abandoned about 1840, as other towns developed. John Hanks
John Hanks (February 9, 1802 – July 1, 1889) was Abraham Lincoln's first cousin, once removed, his mother's cousin. He was the son of William, Nancy Hanks Lincoln's uncle and grandson of Joseph Hanks. Early years and marriage John Hanks was born near Beardstown, and near the Falls at Rough Creek, in Nelson County, Kentucky, on February 9, 1802. Four years later his family moved to Hardin County, Kentucky. Hanks married Susan Malinda Wilson in Kentucky in 1826. She was born on February 14, 1804, and died on March 11, 1863.
