Denton Amendment
The Denton Amendment, also known as the Denton Cargo Program, is a United States government humanitarian program launched in 1987 that allows for space available on military aircraft to be used to carry humanitarian aid supplies to countries in need and for disaster relief. It was proposed as a change to Title 10 U.S.C. Section 402 by U.S. Senator Jeremiah Denton of Alabama in 1985 to allow for humanitarian aid to be transported internationally, or within the United States at minimal or no added cost to the taxpayers, under the direction of the Secretary of Defense. Soto Cano Air Base
Soto Cano Air Base is a Honduran military base to the south of Comayagua in Honduras. It houses 1,200–1,500 U.S. troops and is also used by the Honduran Air Force academy. The airbase became operational in 1940, changing the old location of the Honduras Air Force Academy in Toncontin, Tegucigalpa to Palmerola. It serves as one of the important bases to the US Military's presence in Central America. The U.S. government once used Palmerola (as previously known) as a base of operations to support its foreign policy objectives in the 1980s. Now the U.S. military uses Soto Cano as a launching point for humanitarian aid missions throughout Honduras and Central America. Honduras
Honduras, officially the Republic of Honduras, is a country in Central America. Humanitarianism is an ideology centered on the value of human life, whereby humans practice benevolent treatment and provide assistance to other humans to reduce suffering and improve the conditions of humanity for moral, altruistic, and emotional reasons. Jeremiah Denton
Jeremiah Andrew Denton Jr. (July 15, 1924 – March 28, 2014) was an American politician and United States Navy two-star admiral who served as a U.S. Senator representing Alabama from 1981 to 1987. He was the first Republican to be popularly elected to a Senate seat in Alabama. During the Vietnam War, Denton spent almost eight years as an American prisoner of war (POW) in North Vietnam after the A-6 Intruder he was piloting suffered severe damage resulting from a defective bomb, which detonated as he released his payload in 1965. He was the first of the American POWs released by Hanoi to step off an American plane during Operation Homecoming on February 12, 1973.
