Dennison J. Lawlor (shipbuilder)
Dennison J. Lawlor, (January 1, 1824January 1, 1892) was a 19th-century Canadian-Irish shipbuilder and yacht designer. He apprenticed under shipbuilder Whitmore & Holbrook. Lawlor had his own shipyard, building and designing for 40 years some of the finest yachts, pilot boats, and 150 merchant vessels built from his designs. The most notable were the ''Hesper'', ''Florence'', and '' D. J. Lawlor''. Lawlor died in Chelsea, Massachusetts in 1892. Early life Dennison J. Lawlor was born on January 1, 1824, in New Brunswick, Canada, the son of James Lawlor and an Irish mother. He came to Boston when he was fifteen years old. Lawlor married Caroline F. Littlefield on February 18, 1847, in Cambridge, Massachusetts. They had four children, one being, Captain Josiah Warren Lawlor, who was born on November 8, 1854, in Chelsea. Saint John is a seaport city of the Atlantic Ocean located on the Bay of Fundy in the province of New Brunswick, Canada. Daniel Webster (pilot Boat)
The ''Daniel Webster'' was a 19th-century pilot boat, built in 1851 at Chelsea, Massachusetts. She was sold to the San Francisco Pilots' Opposition Line in October 1853. In 1864 she sailed for Shanghai, China to be in the pilot service. She operated in Shanghai until 1892 when she was lost in a storm. Construction and service The Boston pilot-boat ''Daniel Webster,'' was built in 1851 at Chelsea, Massachusetts. Captain William R. Lampee as a maritime pilot and Thomas Cooper as an apprentice served on the ''Webster'' in the Boston pilot service. She was named for Daniel Webster, an American lawyer and statesman. When Webster died on 24 October 1852, the pilots of the ''Daniel Webster,'' wanted to attend his funeral. George Steers
George Steers (August 15, 1819 – September 25, 1856) was a designer of yachts best known for the famous racing yacht ''America''. He founded a shipyard with his brother, George Steers and Co, and died in an accident just as he was landing a major contract to build boats for the Russian Czar. Early life George Steers was born in Washington, D.C., USA, in 1819. His father, Henry Steers, was engaged as Naval Constructor for the U.S. Government. George never learned the trade of ship carpenter, but rather built vessels based on the design concepts he worked out for himself in his youth, growing up as a shipbuilder's son. The ''Friend'' was a 19th-century pilot boat built by Daniel D. Kelley & Holmes East Boston shipyard in 1848 for Boston pilots. She helped transport Boston maritime pilots between inbound or outbound ships coming into the Boston Harbor. The ''Friend'' was one of the last of the low sided, straight sheared schooners built in the 1840s for Boston pilots. The second Boston pilot boat ''Friend'' was built in 1887. Her name came from the older ''Friend'' that was in the service in the late 1840s. Captain Thomas Cooper sold the ''Friend'' to New York pilots in 1893. Yawl
A yawl is a type of boat. The term has several meanings. It can apply to the rig (or sailplan), to the hull type or to the use which the vessel is put. As a rig, a yawl is a two masted, fore and aft rigged sailing vessel with the mizzen mast positioned abaft (behind) the rudder stock, or in some instances, very close to the rudder stock. This is different from a ketch, where the mizzen mast is forward of the rudder stock. The sail area of the mizzen on a yawl is consequentially proportionately smaller than the same sail on a ketch. As a hull type, yawl may refer to many types of open, clinker-built, double-ended, traditional working craft that operated from the beaches of Britain and Ireland. The ''Phantom'' was a 19th-century Sandy Hook pilot boat built in 1867 from the designs by Dennison J. Lawlor. The schooner was considered a model for her type with a reputation for being very fast. She helped rescue the passengers on the steamship ''SS Oregon'' when it sank in 1886. She was one of the pilot-boats that was lost in the Great Blizzard of 1888.
