Dennis Walaker
Dennis Walaker (January 10, 1941 – December 2, 2014) was an American politician who served as 34th mayor of Fargo, North Dakota. He was elected to a four-year term on June 13, 2006 and took office on June 28, 2006. He was re-elected twice during municipal elections held on June 8, 2010 and June 10, 2014. Walaker died in office during his third term as mayor. His deputy mayor, Tim Mahoney, served as mayor for the remainder of Mayor Walaker's final term. Biography Walaker was born in Fargo in 1941. He attended Leonard High School in Cass County, North Dakota and North Dakota State University. He worked on the construction of Interstate 94, Interstate 29, and projects within the City of Fargo. Walaker was named City's Public Works Operations Manager in 1989. The scope of the position was later expanded to include emergency management, forestry, and fleet management. Mayors Against Illegal Guns Coalition
Everytown for Gun Safety is an American nonprofit organization which advocates for gun control and against gun violence. Everytown was created in 2013 when Mayors Against Illegal Guns and Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America joined forces. The organization works to "support efforts to educate policy makers, as well the press and the public, about the consequences of gun violence and promote efforts to keep guns out of the hands of criminals." The group has focused on efforts to require universal background checks on firearms purchases. The organization also produces research and studies on gun violence. Plains Art Museum
The Plains Art Museum is a fine arts museum located in downtown Fargo, North Dakota, United States. History The history of the museum dates back to 1965 when the "Red River Art Center" opened in the former Moorhead, Minnesota, post office. The name of the museum was changed when it was incorporated with the Rourke Art Gallery to form the "Plains Art Museum" in 1975. After a 1987 schism resulting the departure of founding director James O'Rourke, the Plains Art Museum and the Rourke Art Museum and Gallery became separate institutions. The Museum remained in the downtown Moorhead location until 1996. In October 1997, the Museum relocated to a renovated turn-of-the-century International Harvester warehouse in downtown Fargo, North Dakota. Red River Zoo
The Red River Zoo is a zoo in Fargo, North Dakota. The zoo's first opened in the spring of 1999. It gained accreditation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) in 2006. History The zoo currently sits on that was once a farm owned by the George Anderson family, also known as Red River Ranch. Some of the farm buildings were renovated and are used today by the zoo, while others were removed because they were unsafe. Although the original property was flat and had only seven trees, hundreds of additional trees and shrubs were planted and a series of five ponds created to landscape the area. Animals The award-winning Red River Zoo is home to over 600 animals representing 89 species, including red pandas.
