Denmark Speedway Team
The Denmark national speedway team are one of the major teams in international motorcycle speedway. History It was not until the emergence of rider Ole Olsen that the Danish speedway team came to prominence. Previously the international scene had been largely dominated by Sweden, Poland and Great Britain. When he was joined in the team by Hans Nielsen, Denmark became a major contender for honours and won the 1978 Speedway World Team Cup in West Germany. The team were the dominant force throughout the 1980s, winning seven World Cups, including a record six world titles in a row, between 1983 and 1988. Other key riders during the period were Erik Gundersen, Tommy Knudsen, Jan O. Pedersen and Finn Thomsen. Further World Cup wins came in 1991, 1995, 1997, 2006, 2008, 2012 and 2014, with Nicki Pedersen and Niels Kristian Iversen each claiming four wins. Motorcycle Speedway
Motorcycle speedway, usually referred to simply as speedway, is a motorcycle sport involving four and sometimes up to six riders competing over four clockwise, anti-clockwise laps of an oval circuit. The motorcycles are specialist machines that use only one gear and have no brakes. Racing takes place on a flat oval track usually consisting of soil, dirt, loosely packed shale, or crushed rock (mostly used in Australia and New Zealand). Competitors use this surface to slide their machines sideways, powersliding or broadsiding into the bends. On the straight sections of the track, the motorcycles reach speeds of up to . Norway National Speedway Team
The Norway national speedway team are one of the teams that compete in international team motorcycle speedway. History The Norwegian speedway team competed in the inaugural Speedway World Team Cup in 1960, finishing third in the Scandinavian round at Odense, Denmark. The team consisted of Aage Hansen, Rolf Mellerud, Nils Paulsen, Rolf Westerberg and Sverre Harrfeldt. From 1960 to 1985, the team failed to qualify from their qualifying group during the World Cup, due to the fact that they were drawn together in qualifying with two of the world's strongest speedway nations, Denmark and Sweden. They did however win a bronze medal at the 1968 Speedway World Pairs Championship. Australia Speedway Team
The Australia national speedway team is one of the leading teams in international motorcycle speedway, with the country regarded as the birthplace of the sport in the 1920s. The team are five times champions of the world having won the sports premier team competition in 1976, 1999, 2001, 2002 and 2022. History The national speedway team held test matches against the England as early as 1928, although the first official test match is listed as 30 June 1930 at Wimbledon Stadium. The team won its first Speedway World Team Cup in 1976, with captain John Boulger, Phil Crump, Billy Sanders and Phil Herne. They had to wait over 30 years before winning three tournaments out of four, between 1999 and 2002. Brian Karger
Brian Karger (born 9 February 1967, in Horsens, Denmark) is a Danish former international motorcycle speedway rider. Career He was a member of the Denmark speedway team when they won the 1991 and 1995 World Team Cup Finals. He also qualified for the 1992 World Final in Wrocław, Poland, where he finished 16th (last) with 4pts scored, including a win in his final race. He rode in Sweden and won the Swedish Elitserien in 1988 with Bysarna. He first rode in the United Kingdom for the Swindon Robins, after joining them late in the 1986 British League season. He later rode for Arena Essex Hammers and also for the Belle Vue Aces. In 1991, he helped the Arena Essex Hammers win the Fours Championship during the 1991 British League Division Two season. Gert Handberg
Gert Handberg (born 30 May 1969 in Brædstrup) is a Danish former international motorcycle speedway rider. He earned 20 caps for the Denmark national speedway team. Career Gert joined Cradley Heathens in 1988 on a recommendation, after winning the Danish Junior Championship during the 1986 Danish speedway season. He rode for the club for six consecutive seasons. In 1992, Handberg became the champion of Denmark and won the bronze medal in the 1992 Individual Speedway World Championship, this was despite suffering broken jaw and leg injuries in a British league match during the same season. He was a member of the Denmark speedway team when they won the 1991 World Team Cup. He also won the World Under-21 Championship in 1989 and finished 3rd in the 1992 senior world final. John Jørgensen
John Jørgensen (born 18 July 1962 in Middelfart, Denmark) is a former international motorcycle speedway rider from Denmark. He earned 54 caps for the Denmark national speedway team. He is not to be confused with Johnny Jørgensen, the 1989 Danish Junior speedway champion. Career Jørgensen arrived to race in the British leagues late in the 1982 British League season after Chris Van Straaten signed him to ride for the Birmingham Brummies. After two solid seasons, Birmingham withdrew from the league and Jorgensen was signed by Coventry Bees, where he would spend most of his career. Odsal Stadium (known as Bartercard Odsal Stadium for sponsorship reasons) is a multi-purpose stadium, multipurpose stadium in Bradford, West Yorkshire, England. The Sweden national speedway team are one of the major teams in international motorcycle speedway. History The Sweden speedway team has won the Speedway World Team Cup and Speedway World Cup on ten occasions and were a major force in the opening years of the tournament, winning four out of the first five, between 1960 and 1964. Key riders of the period were Ove Fundin, Rune Sörmander, Björn Knutson, Göte Nordin and Sören Sjösten. The cup eluded them for 23 years between 1971 and 1993, but they regained the trophy in 1994, when Tony Rickardsson, Henrik Gustafsson and Mikael Karlsson were successful. Preben Eriksen
Preben Kollster Eriksen (born 9 August 1958) in Odense, Denmark, is a former motorcycle speedway rider from Denmark. He earned 41 caps for the Denmark national speedway team. Career Eriksen rode with the Wolverhampton Wolves in 1977 but was recalled by the Danish Federation because he was refused clearance over the fact that he did not have senior status. His return to Wolves was thwarted when Ipswich Witches beat them to his signature for the 1979 British League season. He spent five years at Ipswich, building his average up from 4.45 in 1979 to 8.83 in 1982 and won the Knockout Cup in 1981. He finally joined Wolves for the 1984 British League season and spent five years with the Midlands club. Bo Petersen
Bo Petersen (born 21 February 1958 Bolbro, Denmark) is a former motorcycle speedway rider from Denmark. He was the 1980 Danish champion and earned 59 caps for the Denmark national speedway team. Career Petersen first rode in the United Kingdom with the Hackney Hawks for the 1978 British League season. Signed by Len Silver in 1978 he stayed with the Hackney until they closed at the end of the season 1983. In 1984, Petersen signed for the Swindon Robins. He then had spells with King's Lynn Stars and Wolverhampton Wolves in the top flight of the British League, before joining long-time sponsor Ivan Henry's new club Arena Essex Hammers in 1991. Henry had combined with Terry Russell to take over the Hammers from former promoter Chick Woodroffe. Peter Ravn (speedway Rider)
Peter Ravn (born 16 March 1962) is a former international motorcycle speedway rider from Denmark. He earned 42 caps for the Denmark national speedway team. Speedway career Ravn rode in the top tier of British Speedway for Belle Vue Aces from 1981 to 1983. Ravn was also a World Under 21 finalist in 1981 and 1982 but came to prominence after winning the bronze medal at the 1982 Individual Speedway Junior European Championship, losing out on the silver medal after a run-off defeat to Mark Courtney. Ravn won a gold medal as member of the Denmark speedway team at the Speedway World Team Cup in the 1983 Speedway World Team Cup and the year continued to provide success when Ravn after joining Cradley Heathens, helped the Midlands club seal the league and cup double during the 1983 British League season.
