Denis Hurley (bishop)
Denis Eugene Hurley, OMI OMSG (9 November 1915 – 13 February 2004) was a South African Catholic prelate who served as Vicar Apostolic of Natal from 1946 to 1951 and as Archbishop of Durban from 1951 to 1992. He was a member of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate. He was born in Cape Town and spent his early years on Robben Island, where his father was the lighthouse keeper. In 1951, Hurley was appointed Archbishop of Durban, becoming the youngest archbishop in the world at the time. Hurley was an active participant in the Second Vatican Council, which he described as "the greatest project of adult education ever held in the world". An outspoken opponent of apartheid, as chairman of the Southern African Catholic Bishops' Conference, Hurley drafted the first of the ground-breaking pastoral letters in which the bishops denounced apartheid as "blasphemy" and "intrinsically evil." Denis Hurley (rugby Union)
Denis Hurley (born 15 July 1984) is a former Irish rugby union player, who represented Munster and Ireland. He played as a fullback, wing or centre. Early life Hurley attended Castleknock College, Dublin, St Patrick's Classical School in Navan and St Munchin's College, Limerick. Munster Hurley made his Munster debut against Llanelli Scarlets in May 2006, in a Celtic League fixture. He sprung to notice when he was preferred to Shaun Payne at fullback in Munster's 2007–08 Heineken Cup quarter-final clash with Gloucester. He stayed at fullback for the semi-final against Saracens, and started in the 2008 Heineken Cup Final against Toulouse, which Munster won 16–13. Hurley was part of the Munster team that won the Celtic League in the 2009–09 season, and again in the 2010–11 season. Denis Hurley (hurler)
Denis Hurley (born 10 May 1933) is an Irish former hurler, Gaelic footballer and selector. At club he level he played with Sarsfields, Glanmire and Imokilly and was also a member of the Cork senior hurling team. Playing career Born and raised in Riverstown, Hurley's father had played with the Sarsfields club and was goalkeeper for the Cork junior hurling team that lost the 1929 All-Ireland junior final to Offaly. It was as a student at Christian Brothers College that he became involved in athletics and he won Munster and national titles over 100 yards and 220 yards. After leaving school Hurley gave up athletics to concentrate on Gaelic games and he won Cork SHC titles with Sarsfields in 1951 and 1957. He first appeared on the inter-county scene as sub-goalkeeper on the Cork minor hurling team during the 1950 Munster MHC.
