Deniliquin Football Club
The Deniliquin Football & Netball Club, nicknamed the ''Rams'', is an Australian rules football and netball club based in the town of Deniliquin located in the Riverina district of New South Wales. The club's teams currently compete in the Murray FNL, which the Deniliquin football club joined in 1949. History Football appears to have been played in and around Deniliquin as early as the 1870s, but today's Deniliquin FC was born some six decades later, in 1933. In early July, 1892, two football clubs were established in Deniliquin, one called the Imperials, of North Deniliquin and the South Deniliquin Football Club. The first recorded match was in late July, 1892 between was between South Deniliquin: 2.6 – 18 defeating Imperials: 1.8 – 14. Murray Football League
The Murray Football Netball League is an Australian rules football and netball league affiliated with the Victorian Country Football League. The league covers a large area of northern Victoria and southern New South Wales from Shepparton in the south to Deniliquin in the north. It covers much the same area as the Picola & District Football League but the teams tend to be the larger communities and towns. History The "Murray Football League" (MFL) was established in 1931, when it superseded the old Goulburn Valley Football Association, with the following clubs, Barooga, Cobram, Numurkah, Strathmerton and Tocumwal. Nathalia Football Club's admission into the MFL was initially rejected in 1931 by club delegates and they entered the Western and Moira Ridings Football Association. Peter McIntyre (Australian Footballer)
Peter McIntyre (born 6 January 1967) is a former professional Australian rules footballer who played for the Adelaide Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). From Deniliquin, New South Wales, McIntyre moved to Adelaide, playing with the South Adelaide Football Club in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL) before being recruited to the Adelaide Football Club in their entry into the Australian Football League in 1991. In Adelaide's first match McIntyre was an unlikely hero, kicking four goals in a large defeat of Hawthorn Football Club. He kicked the second ever goal for the Adelaide Crows and played in their first ever game against Hawthorn Hawks. As a key position player, he played 14 games for 19 goals before he was cut from the side at the end of 1992. Deniliquin () is a town in the western Riverina region of south-western New South Wales, Australia, close to the border with Victoria. It is the largest town in the Edward River Council local government area. Graham Ion
Graham Ion (born 12 October 1940) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Footscray in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Ion made his league debut at just 17 years of age, against Melbourne at Western Oval in 1958. It was his only game of the season, but he was a regular member of the team from 1959. A key forward despite his small stature, he kicked 27 goals in 1961 to finish third in Footscray's goal-kicking. He played all 21 games that year, including the 1961 VFL Grand Final loss, where he played at centre half-forward. When Ted Whitten was away playing interstate football, Ion captained Footscray in their round 13 fixture against North Melbourne - he was only 20 years old at the time. Peter O'Donohue
Peter O'Donohue (14 June 1923 – 4 November 2012) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Hawthorn in the VFL during the 1940s. O'Donohue usually played in defence or in the centre and played 109 games with Hawthorn. He was made captain during the 1950 season and kept that position until the end of 1952. His time at Hawthorn was interrupted by his service in the Royal Australian Navy during World War II. In 1953 he went to Western Australia, where he became captain coach of West Perth for two seasons. Keith Schaefer (20 December 1928 – 21 August 1976) was an Australian rules footballer who played with South Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Schaefer played 102 games for South Melbourne, between 1947 and 1953. A centreman, Schaefer was a Victorian interstate representative in 1948, at the age of just 19. He won South Melbourne's best and fairest award in 1952. Kevin O'Donnell (12 July 1924 – 15 January 2002) was an Australian rules footballer who played with St Kilda in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Early years Born in Melbourne, O'Donnell was a student at St Kilda's Christian Brothers College. He later did a building apprenticeship at Swinburne College. His early football was played with South Caulfield CYMS. Military service In World War II he served overseas with the Royal Australian Air Force after enlisting in 1943. Following service in Britain, O'Donnell was a member of the occupation forces in Germany. Phil Nagle
Phillip Daniel Nagle (21 August 1921 – 8 July 1993) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Richmond in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Nagle, a rover, was recruited from Collingwood CYMS. He made seven appearances for Richmond in the 1941 VFL season, including the club's semi-final loss to Essendon, then did not play for the next four seasons due to the Second World War. When Nagle returned in the opening round of the 1946 season, he was reported for striking Fitzroy player Noel Price. He was able to play against North Melbourne the following week, but then received his punishment, a four-game suspension. It was not until round 10 that he made his way back into the team and he finished the year with eight appearances. He then captain-coached Echuca Football League club Deniliquin in 1947.
