Haruna Nsubuga
Haruna Nsubuga is a Ugandan chess player. Chess career Nsubuga began playing chess at age 14. He is coached by Elijah Emojong. In 2011, he won the Junior Championship and the Uganda National Championship, being the only Ugandan player to accomplish this feat. In February 2018, he participated in the St Louis Chess Open and won the adult category ahead of Michel Zialor, Sergey Prokopyev, and Timothy Kate. He later represented Uganda at the 2018 Chess Olympiad. Nsubuga was able to play in the Chess World Cup 2023 after obtaining the additional funding he needed to fly to Azerbaijan. He was the second Ugandan after Arthur Ssegwanyi to participate in a Chess World Cup. He was aiming to be able to become an International Master by earning two more IM norms through participating in the event. Arthur Ssegwanyi
Arthur Ssegwanyi (born March 12, 1988) is a Ugandan chess player. He was awarded the title of International Master (IM) by FIDE in 2015 as a result of winning the Zone 4.2 Individual Championship in the same year. This victory also qualified him to play in the FIDE World Cup 2015. In this event, he was paired against the fourth seed, Anish Giri. Ssegwanyi drew the first game in 158 moves, then lost the second game and consequently he was eliminated from the tournament. The 44th Chess Olympiad (also known as the Indian Chess Olympiad), was organised by the Fédération Internationale des Échecs (FIDE) in Chennai, the state capital of Tamil Nadu, India from 28 July to 9 August 2022. It consisted of open and women's tournaments, as well as several events designed to promote the game of chess. The event was initially supposed to take place in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia, along with the Chess World Cup 2019, but was later moved to Moscow and scheduled for the period from 5 to 17 August 2020. However, it was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and then relocated to Chennai following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. This was the first Chess Olympiad to take place in India. The Chess World Cup 2023 was a 206-player single-elimination chess tournament that took place in Baku, Azerbaijan from 30 July to 24 August 2023. It was the 10th edition of the Chess World Cup. The top three finishers in the tournament qualified for the 2024 Candidates Tournament. The tournament was held in parallel with the Women's Chess World Cup 2023. Jan-Krzysztof Duda was the defending champion. He lost in the fifth round (last 16) to Fabiano Caruana. Format The tournament was an eight-round knockout event, with the top 50 seeds having been given a bye directly into the second round. The losers of the two semi-finals played a match for third place.
