Denby Railway Station
Denby railway station was a railway station which served the village of Denby in Derbyshire, England. It was opened in 1856 as Smithy Houses by the Midland Railway to on its Ripley branch from Little Eaton Junction (approximately 3 miles north of Derby) to Ripley. Denby itself is a fairly scattered community, but the main part was about a mile away. From November 1858 the timetables began to refer to "Denbey", with the Post Office spelling being adopted in February 1878. Initially there was a low platform on the up-side, but a new higher platform to match those of the other stations was added at some time later on the down-side. An important cargo was coal all from the many mines and opencast workings. An amount of ironstone was also worked but was of low quality. Denby
Denby is a village in the English county of Derbyshire that is notable as the birthplace of John Flamsteed, England's first Astronomer Royal, and the location of the Denby Pottery Company. The population at the 2001 Census was 1,827, increasing to 2,190 at the 2011 Census. History The settlement was listed in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Denebi. By 1334, it was a market town and held an annual fair in September. For over two centuries, ironstone and clay were being mined; coal mining started in the 1200s. Royal astronomer John Flamsteed (1646–1719) was born in Denby. In 1806, William Bourne leased the clay bed that had been discovered while a road was being built. Three years later, the family began manufacturing salt-glazed pottery under the Bourne name, with son Joseph running the operation. Kilburn Railway Station
Kilburn railway station was a railway station which served the village of Kilburn in Derbyshire, England. It was opened in 1856 by the Midland Railway on its Ripley branch from Little Eaton Junction (approximately 3 miles north of Derby) to Ripley. It was approximately 2 miles from Coxbench and about a mile from Kilburn itself. It did not open until 1 December, three months after the line opened. There was a single platform on the down side, adjacent to the level crossing over the Belper Road. On the other side was the large Station Hotel which still exists but is now a day nursery. Behind this was a brickworks, which is remembered by the name of Brickyard Lane, and nearby a glassworks. Butterley Company
The Butterley Company was an English manufacturing firm founded as Benjamin Outram and Company in 1790. Its subsidiaries existed until 2009. Origins This area of Derbyshire had been known for its outcrops of iron ore which had been exploited at least since the Middle Ages. After the Norman Conquest, nearby Duffield Frith was the property of the de Ferrers family who were iron masters in Normandy. In 1793, William Jessop, with the assistance of Benjamin Outram, constructed the Cromford Canal to connect Pinxton and Cromford with the Erewash Canal. In digging Butterley Tunnel for the Cromford Canal, coal and iron were discovered. The Little Eaton Gangway, officially the Derby Canal Railway, was a narrow gauge industrial wagonway serving the Derby Canal, in England, at Little Eaton in Derbyshire. Tarmacadam is a road surfacing material made by combining crushed stone, tar, and sand, patented by Welsh inventor Edgar Purnell Hooley in 1902.
