Demountable Rack Offload And Pickup System
The Demountable Rack Offload and Pickup System (DROPS) was a family of logistics vehicles formerly operated by the British Army, which consisted of two vehicle types: * Leyland DAF medium mobility load carrier (MMLC) * Foden improved medium mobility load carrier (IMMLC) Both were able to transport 15-tonne flatracks or containers configured to ISO 20 feet standard and to load and offload them autonomously. Both may have been supported with side rail transfer equipment (SRTE) for loading and unloading railway wagons. The DROP system was designed to meet the very high intensity battles in Central Europe in the last decade of the Cold War. Leyland ( ) is a town in South Ribble, Lancashire, England, 6 miles (10 km) south of Preston, Lancashire, Preston. The population was 35,578 at the 2011 Census. The name of the town is Anglo-Saxon, meaning "untilled land". History Leyland was an area of fields, with Roman roads passing through, from ancient Wigan to Walton-le-Dale. It is mentioned in the Domesday Book (1085). In 1066, Edward the Confessor, King Edward the Confessor presided over the whole of Leyland. DAF NV (originally DAF BV) was a holding company formed in April 1987, when DAF Trucks and the Leyland Trucks division of the Rover Group merged. In February 1993, it was placed in receivership. History DAF BV was formed on 6 April 1987, when the Dutch DAF Trucks company merged with the Leyland Trucks division of the British Rover Group, which included the van making business of Freight Rover. History Scammell started as a late- Victorian period wheelwright and coach-building business, G Scammell & Nephew Ltd in Spitalfields, London. Leyland Motors Limited (later known as the Leyland Motor Corporation) was an English vehicle manufacturer of lorries, buses and trolleybuses. The company diversified into car manufacturing with its acquisitions of Triumph and Rover in 1960 and 1967, respectively. It gave its name to the British Leyland Motor Corporation, formed when it merged with British Motor Holdings in 1968, to become British Leyland after having been nationalised.
