Democratic Left (Ecuador)
The Democratic Left (Spanish: ''Izquierda Democrática'', ID) is a social-democratic political party in Ecuador. It was founded in 1970 by the then congressman Rodrigo Borja Cevallos. Ideologically, it identifies as a central goal to "achieve social justice with freedom in an innovative, just, egalitarian, equitable, fraternal, solidary, dynamic, progressive and decentralized society under the inspiration of the ideological principles of democratic socialism... and inserts itself in the international scene, in the center-left tendency". Democratic Left Scotland () is a non-party political organisation, membership of which is open to both those who belong to political parties and those who do not. The Party of the Democratic Left (, SDĽ) was a centre-left political party in Slovakia. It is the reformation of another party by the same name, which had been founded in 1990. The original Party of the Democratic Left merged with Robert Fico's Direction – Social Democracy, which had itself split from the Party of the Democratic Left, on 31 December 2004. A new party was founded, and registered in May 2005. The party's current president is Jozef Ďurica. In its first general election, in 2006, the party won 0.13% of the vote. In 2010 elections, the SDĽ won 2.41%, falling just under half of the 5% threshold for seats in the National Council. History At the party congress on 14 December 1991 in Trenčín, the congress adopted new party constitution and decided to leave federation of Communist Party of Czecho-Slovakia, due to disputes with the Communist Party of Bohemia and Moravia and changing situation in the Czech and Slovak Federative Republic. Its forerunner was the ''Democrats of the Left'' group which was active between 1948 and 1953 and formed by independent leftist senators elected into the Popular Democratic Front. A group of ''Independent Democrats of the Left'' then existed from 1953 to 1963. The Independent Left was created by the Italian Communist Party with the goal to reinforce its leadership over the Italian left after the passage of the Italian Socialist Party to an alliance with the centrist Christian Democracy. The group was formed by past members of the Socialist Party, actors, judges, and many leftist Catholics who did not become full members of the Communist Party because it was seen as an atheist organization.
