Democratic Alternative (North Macedonia)
The Democratic Alternative (, ''Demokratska Alternativa'') or DA is a centrist political party in North Macedonia. The Democratic Alternative was formed in March 1998 by Vasil Tupurkovski, charismatic member of the last Presidency of the former Yugoslavia. Prior to the 1998 elections, DA entered into a coalition with VMRO-DPMNE with which it won the elections and formed a ruling government. The period in the government of this party, from the end of 1998 to the end of 2000, will be remembered mostly for the controversial decision to recognize the Republic of China instead of the People's Republic of China. DA argued that such diplomatic move would help North Macedonia attract significant foreign investment from Taiwan - with even a sum of US$1 billion being mentioned by Tupurkovski. Vasil Tupurkovski
Vasil Tupurkovski (; born 8 April 1951) is a Macedonian academic, politician and the former president of the Olympic Committee of North Macedonia. Tupurkovski was born in Skopje, PR Macedonia, FPR Yugoslavia. After graduation, he worked as a professor of International law at the University of Skopje. He was the founder of the centrist political party Democratic Alternative (''Demokratska alternativa'') in March 1998. Rainbow
A rainbow is an optical phenomenon caused by refraction, internal reflection and dispersion of light in water droplets resulting in a continuous spectrum of light appearing in the sky. VMRO-DPMNE
The Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization – Democratic Party for Macedonian National Unity (), abbreviated as VMRO-DPMNE (), is a conservative and the main centre-right to right-wing political party in North Macedonia. It was established as a nationalist and anti-communist party. It has later rebranded itself as Christian-democratic. The party claims that their goals and objectives are to express the tradition of the Macedonian people on whose political struggle and concepts it is based.
