The House of Demidov (russian: Деми́довы) also Demidoff, was a prominent Russian noble family during the 18th and 19th centuries. Originating in the city of Tula in the 17th century, the Demidovs found success through metal products, and were entered into the European nobility by Peter the Great. Their descendants became among the most influential merchants and earliest industrialists in the Russian Empire, and at their peak were predicted to be the second-richest family in Russia, behind only the Russian Imperial Family. Count Elim Pavlovich Demidov, 3rd Prince of San Donato (russian: Елим Павлович Демидов; 6 August (20 June, per Ferrand) 1868, in Hietzing suburb of Vienna – 28 March 1943, in Athens) of the Demidov industrial family, was the Russian Empire's last ambassador to Greece, where he and his wife remained in exile and him as White Russian ambassador. Anna Stepanovna Demidova (26 January 1878 – 17 July 1918) was a lady-in-waiting in the service of Empress Alexandra of Russia. She stayed with the Romanov family when they were arrested, and was executed together with Alexandra and the Romanov family on 17 July 1918. She had shared the Romanov family's exile at Tobolsk and Ekaterinburg following the Russian Revolution of 1917 before their execution. She is remembered for staying with the Romanovs to the end. Georgy Demidov (russian: link=no, Гео́ргий Гео́ргиевич Деми́дов) (November 29, 1908 – February 19, 1987) was a Russian political prisoner and writer. Born in Saint Petersburg to a working-class family, Demidov showed technical and engineering gifts at an early age and was thought to be a future physicist. From 1929 to 1931 he was imprisoned for political crimes. In the winter of 1938, he was arrested in Kharkiv, where he was working and studying at the Kharkov Electrotechnical Institute, after being served a summons for an internal passport check. It was a check that was to last eighteen years. His interrogator threatened to arrest Demidov's wife, and orphan his five-month-old daughter. Nikolay Ivanovich Demidov (19 August 1773 – 4 June 1833) was a Russian General of Infantry, Adjutant-General and senator. Life From a noble family in Ryazan province, he was the son of Brigadier Ivan Ivanovich Demidov. As was the custom of the time his birth was recorded with the Preobrazhensky Lifeguard regiment and three years later promoted to Sergeant.
