DemiDec Resources produces study materials for participants in the United States Academic Decathlon, hosts the World Scholar's Cup, and co-operates several study academies around the world. A private company, it was founded in 1994 by now-CEO Daniel Berdichevsky. History In the 1980s and early 1990s, the United States Academic Decathlon had few third-party companies that produced study materials for students, and individual teams had to do most of the research themselves. After setting an individual scoring record in the 1993–94 season and winning the United States Academic Decathlon National Championship, National Championship, Berdichevsky along with teammate Andrew Salter decided to address this vacuum by creating study guides and practice examinations for the next season. United States Academic Decathlon
The Academic Decathlon (also called AcDec, AcaDeca or AcaDec) is an annual Student competition, high school academic competition organized by the non-profit United States Academic Decathlon (USAD). The competition consists of seven objective multiple choice tests, two subjective performance events, and an essay. Academic Decathlon was created by Robert Peterson in 1968 for local schools in Orange County, California, and was expanded nationally in 1981 by Robert Peterson, William Patton, first President of the new USAD Board; and Phillip Bardos, Chairman of the new USAD Board. World Scholar's Cup
The World Scholar’s Cup (often abbreviated as WSC) is an annual international academic program. More than 50,000 students from over 60 countries participate every year. The program was founded by DemiDec, in particular by Daniel Berdichevsky, in early 2006. The first WSC took place in South Korea in 2007 at the Hankuk Academy of Foreign Studies. The World Scholar's Cup aims to teach students with interesting, not-taught-in-school lessons, and find common ground between people of different backgrounds. Its mascot is the alpaca. Tournament format Teams and points system Each team participating in the World Scholar's Cup is generally composed of three students, from the same school or different schools. The United States Academic Decathlon (USAD) is an American academic competition for high school students. The United States Academic Decathlon National Championship, first held in 1982, pits winners at the state level against each other for a national title. The Academic Decathlon consists of 10 events: art, economics, essay, interview, language and literature, math, music, science, social science, and speech. The Super Quiz replaces one of the seven objective events; since 2003, it has alternated between replacing science and social science. The Academic Decathlon requires participation from students of all levels of academic ability; teams generally consist of nine members, who are divided into three divisions based on grade point average: Honors (3.80–4.00 GPA), Scholastic (3.20–3.79 GPA), and Varsity (0.00–3.19 GPA).
