Bluegrass Music
Bluegrass music is a genre of American roots music that developed in the 1940s in the Appalachian region of the United States. The genre derives its name from the band Bill Monroe and the Blue Grass Boys. Like mainstream country music, it largely developed out of old-time string music, though in contrast, bluegrass is traditionally played exclusively on acoustic instruments and also has roots in traditional English, Scottish, and Irish ballads and dance tunes as well as in blues and jazz. Celia Woodsmith (born in 1985 in Tryon, North Carolina) is a New England–based bluegrass, blues and folk musician. Profile Since January 2011, Woodsmith, has been the lead singer, rhythm guitar player, washbaord player, and songwriter for Della Mae. In 2013, Della Mae won the International Bluegrass Music Association's Emerging Artist of the Year award in 2013 and was nominated for a best bluegrass album at the 56th Grammy Awards. Della Mae has worked with the US Department of State as cultural diplomats and, as such, in 2012 travelled to Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
