The district includes 94 contributing sites along the Mason–Dixon line and includes the Transpeninsular Line, Post Marked West site, Tangent Line, the Arc Corner, and the Twelve-Mile Circle. With The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places on February 18, 1975, for its significance in engineering and politics/government. Description The markers are mainly on three parts of the Delaware boundary. First, the southern boundary with Maryland along the Transpeninsular Line from Fenwick Island to the Midpoint Marker, the first crownstone set by Mason and Dixon. Second, the western boundary with Maryland from the Transpeninsular Line Midpoint Marker to the boundary with Pennsylvania at the Tri-State Monument. Third, the northern boundary with Pennsylvania, the Twelve-Mile Circle. In addition, the start ...

Transpeninsular Line
The Transpeninsular Line (at approximately 38°27′ N) is a surveyed line, the eastern half of which forms the north–south border between Delaware and Maryland. The border turns roughly north from the midpoint of the line towards the Twelve-Mile Circle, which forms much of the remainder of the Delaware land border. Overview In 1751, a line was surveyed straight across the Delmarva Peninsula beginning at what at least some early Swedish settlers called ''Cape Hinlopen'', which was later to become the southern boundary of Delaware. This place is better known as Fenwick Island. Twenty-four miles north is another cape named Cape Henlopen near Lewes, Delaware. Various spellings of ''henlopen'' mean "entering in" or "approaching," although one authority insists it means "runaway cape." The confusion of the placement of Cape Henlopen was the crux of a long-standing dispute between the Penns (Delaware) and the Calverts (Maryland), the latter claiming the Lewes' cape should ha ...

Historic Districts On The National Register Of Historic Places In Pennsylvania
History is the systematic study of the past, focusing primarily on the human past. As an academic discipline, it analyses and interprets evidence to construct narratives about what happened and explain why it happened. Some theorists categorize history as a social science, while others see it as part of the humanities or consider it a hybrid discipline. Similar debates surround the purpose of history—for example, whether its main aim is theoretical, to uncover the truth, or practical, to learn lessons from the past. In a more general sense, the term ''history'' refers not to an academic field but to the past itself, times in the past, or to individual texts about the past. Historical research relies on primary and secondary sources to reconstruct past events and validate interpretations. Source criticism is used to evaluate these sources, assessing their authenticity, content, and reliability. Historians strive to integrate the perspectives of several sources to develop ...
