Del Shofner
Delbert Martin Shofner (December 11, 1934 – March 11, 2020) was an American professional football player who was an end and flanker for 11 seasons with the Los Angeles Rams and the New York Giants of the National Football League (NFL) from 1957 to 1967. He played college football for the Baylor Bears. Early life Shofner played college football at Baylor University. In addition to football, Shofner played basketball, baseball, and was a sprinter while at Baylor. Shofner helped lead the Baylor Bears to a 13–7 victory over Tennessee in the 1957 Sugar Bowl and was voted the game's Most Valuable Player. Career Shofner began his career in 1957 as a defensive back. He played in 12 games (starting 10) and intercepted two passes while recovering a fumble. The 1964 Pro Bowl was the NFL's 14th annual all-star game which featured the outstanding performers from the 1963 season. 1957 Sugar Bowl
The 1957 Sugar Bowl to the featured the second-ranked Tennessee Volunteers and the 11th-ranked Baylor Bears. Behind a strong defense, the Baylor Bears upset undefeated Tennessee. After a scoreless first quarter of play, Baylor scored on a 12-yard scoring pass from quarterback Bobby Jones to Jerry Marcontell to take a 6–0 lead. The score was set up by Del Shofner's 54-yard run. In the third stanza, quarterback Johnny Majors scored on a 1-yard touchdown run to put Tennessee on top at 7–6. In the fourth quarter, Buddy Humphrey's one-yard touchdown run gave Baylor a 13–7 advantage. Baylor's defense provided the difference as they didn't allow any more points. In gridiron football, a reception, also known informally as a catch, is part of a passing play in which a player in bounds successfully catches (receives) a forward pass thrown from their team's quarterback behind the line of scrimmage.
