Deep Funk
Deep funk is a subgenre of funk music which features a "hard, lean" sound and emphasis on groove, improvisation, and musicianship over traditional songwriting. The term is also used to describe rare funk recordings sought out by collectors and DJs. Artists such as James Brown and the Meters were basic reference points for the style. Deep funk later saw increased popularity due to hip hop producers seeking out new material to sample, as well as in the British rare groove and Northern soul scenes. Though most deep funk was originally released on 45s, modern releases by labels such as Goldmine, BBE, and Stones Throw, as well as DJ Keb Darge's compilations of deep funk, have helped usher the style into the CD age. Funk
Funk is a music genre that originated in African-American communities in the mid-1960s when musicians created a rhythmic, danceable new form of music through a mixture of various music genres that were popular among African-Americans in the mid-20th century. SoHo, short for "South of Houston Street, Houston Street", is a neighborhood in Lower Manhattan, New York City. Keb Darge
Keb Darge (born 1957) is a Scottish DJ and music producer, in the genres of Northern soul, deep funk, garage punk, and rockabilly music. He is credited with inventing the term 'deep funk'. Early life Darge has described himself as "a bit of a thug" in his youth. In his late teens, he "picked a fight with the only English boy in the town" and the other teenager gave him a drubbing, using taekwondo moves. Surprised, Darge asked him how he had done it, then began taking taekwondo classes. He eventually became Scottish taekwondo champion. Darge began Northern soul dancing in his late teens and entered local disco dance competitions (dancing in the "northern soul style") in the North of Scotland. Stones Throw Records is an American independent record label based in Los Angeles, California. Under the direction of founder Peanut Butter Wolf, Stones Throw has released music ranging from hip hop to experimental psychedelic rock. ''LA Weekly'' deemed the label an "eternally evolving experiment" in celebration of its 20th anniversary. The Meters
The Meters (later The Funky Meters) are an American funk band formed in 1965 in New Orleans by Zigaboo Modeliste (drums), George Porter Jr. (bass), Leo Nocentelli (guitar) and Art Neville (keyboards).
