Declan Maxwell
Declan Maxwell () is a former Gaelic footballer from County Leitrim, Ireland. Playing at both midfield and forward positions, Maxwell was a panel member of the Leitrim county football team from 2002. He won the Leitrim "County Player of the Year" in 2009. He is a former member of the Drumreilly club, with whom he won the Leitrim Intermediate Football Championship in 2007. Leitrim Observer
The ''Leitrim Observer'' is the oldest newspaper in County Leitrim. It is a weekly newspaper published every Wednesday and once competed with another newspaper called the '' Leitrim Post'' which was forced to close in 2009 during the economic crash. History The ''Leitrim Observer'' was founded by the Mulvey family in 1889 and was bought by Pat Dunne, for a rumoured sum of £150 some time before 1910. The Black and Tans made the paper their first stop when they came to Carrick-on-Shannon during the War of Independence and badly burned the premises, destroying a lot of the early files of the paper. In those times, the local news pages were printed at the paper's works in Carrick-on-Shannon, while the "international" news pages were printed elsewhere, and the front page was devoted entirely to advertising. Drumreilly civil parish is situated partly in the baronies of Carrigallen and Dromahaire, County Leitrim and partly in the barony of Tullyhaw, County Cavan, Ireland. Etymology The name of the parish derives from Drumreilly townland in the parish, which is an Anglicisation of the Gaelic ''Druim Air Belaigh'' meaning 'The Hill-Ridge of the Eastern Road'. The earliest surviving reference to the name is c.800 in the Martyrology of Tallaght, where it is spelled ''Dromma Airbelaig''. History The parish is in an area originally called Cenel Luacháin inhabited from early times by the Conmhaícne tribe. Leitrim County Football Team
The Leitrim county football team ( ) represents Leitrim in men's Gaelic football and is governed by Leitrim GAA, the county board of the Gaelic Athletic Association. The team competes in the three major annual inter-county competitions; the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, the Connacht Senior Football Championship, and the National Football League. The team last won the Connacht Senior Championship in 1994 but has never won the All-Ireland Senior Championship or the National League. County Leitrim ( ; gle, Contae Liatroma) is a county in Ireland. It is in the province of Connacht and is part of the Northern and Western Region. It is named after the village of Leitrim. Leitrim County Council is the local authority for the county, which had a population of 35,087 according to the 2022 census. Gaelic football ( ga, Peil Ghaelach; short name '), commonly known as simply Gaelic, GAA or Football is an Irish team sport. It is played between two teams of 15 players on a rectangular grass pitch. The objective of the sport is to score by kicking or punching the ball into the other team's goals (3 points) or between two upright posts above the goals and over a crossbar above the ground (1 point). Players advance the football up the field with a combination of carrying, bouncing, kicking, hand-passing, and soloing (dropping the ball and then toe-kicking the ball upward into the hands).
