Debra Kolodny
Debra Kolodny is a bisexual rights activist and congregational rabbi. They served in the past as Executive Director of Nehirim. Background Kondny came out as bisexual in 1984 and has continued to be open about their orientation in the context of rabbinic ministry. They edited the first anthology by bisexual people of faith, ''Blessed Bi Spirit'' (2000), to which they contributed "Hear, I Pray You, This Dream Which I Have Dreamed", about Jewish identity and bisexuality. Kolodny was the National Coordinator of BiNet USA for five years and facilitator of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force's National Religious Leadership Roundtable from 1998 until 2004. Kolodny was also interviewed by several major news outlets for stories on bisexuality, such as the ''Philadelphia Inquirer'' and the ''Toronto Globe and Mail''. Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights in the United States are among the most socially, culturally, and legally permissive and advanced in the world, with public opinion and jurisprudence on the issue changing significantly since the late 1980s. In 1962, all 50 states criminalized same-sex sexual activity, but by 2003 all remaining laws against same-sex sexual activity were invalidated in Lawrence v. Texas. Nehirim
Nehirim was a national community of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBTQ) Jews, families, students and allies that was founded in 2004. The organization ceased operations at the end of 2015. History Nehirim was founded in 2004 by Jay Michaelson. He served as Executive Director until 2010, when Michael Hopkins succeeded him. Rabbi Debra Kolodny assumed the role in 2013. Nehirim's Board of Directors included Corey Friedlander, Rabbi Joel Alter, Rabbi Julia Watts Belser, Rabbi David Dunn Bauer, Dr. Joel Kushner, and Dr. Alyssa Finn. Nehirim means "lights" in Hebrew. The name comes from the Hebrew word Zohar, referring to the lights of heaven and rainbow colors seen at sunset.
